Josh was smart enough to keep their collaborators from Uncut Gems like Ron Bronstein as co-writer, Darius Khondji as DoP, Oneohtrix Point Never for the score, etc. Benny got completely different people in those roles for Smashing Machine, and it just didn't work as well. Maybe Josh is simply better at directing.
