he's even more callous in the book
all chapters before the end are from Blackthorne, Yabu or even Ichido's viewpoint
only the very last chapter is from Toranaga's viewpoint and his toughts and there for the first time you can clearly he never thought of the Anjin as anything more than a tool and that he's even planning on having the heir of Japan, the kid he claims to protect from the regents, to have "an unfortunate accident" in the future

his character has been watered down because zoomer audiences, particularly in the US cannot deal with a morally grey character "winning"
>>
Does anyone else find it a bit weird how these various Western-Japanese productions (this, Tokyo Vice etc) always portray Japs as suicide elementals who are always a hair's breadth from being triggered into honorable seppuku and will take every opportunity to do it with no hesitation?
Maybe I'm just too far removed from the reality of Japan and Japanese history to buy it, but it feels unconvincing to me.

startu diggin in your butt, Tywin

>a morally grey character "winning"
That was Tokugawa Ieyasu to a tee
>>

that's just historically accurate, he forced the heir into rebellion with outrageous demands then sacked and burnt the castle they were hiding in. I think the show is trying to make it all seem like it has meaning beyond tyranny otherwise all his supporters would look extremely stupid.

The only thing that Tywin did wrong was not getting Littlefinger to pay off some street rat to shank Tyrion while he was brothel-hopping.

tokugawa waits, toranaga waits, that is his stratagem he just waits for everyone else to fuck up and he does nothing, absolutely nothing. He waits. everyone else flails around doing things and he just waits and waits and waits.

Until its time to fuck everyone five ways from sunday.
