what went wrong?

They look like middle schoolers
>>
>diverse group straight out of a PSA
>>

It didn't accurate reflect the demographics of those who grew up in the 90s. No one wants to watch their childhood get rewritten with a modern context.
>>
>>217429525
During the 90s North America was dominated by Japanese culture: Pokémon, Dragon Ball, Gundam, Hello Kitty and Sailor Moon. This show referenced none of it because they couldn't (or wouldn't) secure the rights to it.

That is why it feels so unnatural.
>>
i never watched this dogshit. did they address hyde at all after the whole danny masterson situation or did they flat-out pretend he never existed?

As much as I hate it this is the answer. Spice Girls was one of the only 90s franchises that wasn't from Japan.

sure it was, weeb

POGS and beanie babies were probably the only non-Japanese craze at the time between the tamagotchis and power rangers.

Magic the gathering as well.

You two are fucking idiots. Most of that shit was late 90s stuff for younger kids, high schoolers in the 90s were not watching Pokémon. The Simpsons, X-Files, Saved by the Bell, Nirvana and Tupac were sure as he'll not Japanese.
>>
>>217429525
Nothing says the 90s in a small Wisconsin town like a group of racially diverse and LGBT teenagers!

I see what you’re doing and it’s fucking evil. You’re trying to indoctrinate zoomers reading this thread into thinking the 90’s were all about tranime while trying to erase American culture out of the picture. Maybe that’s what you consoomed because you’re obese and sat in a basement all throughout that decade, but Japanese slop was only a fraction of the other stuff that was popular in the 90’s. Absolutely despicable shit going on here.

I grew up in the 90s in Toronto Canada. Asian culture dominated everything here.

Shocking

Season 1 was 1995. Even if it was later there are plenty of sitcoms that referenced popular IPs that changed the name - Everybody Loves Raymond did it easily.
>>
>>217430212
I'm one of the poster you replies to and I gave three examples of American crazes in the 90s.

Instead of calling posts on a mongolian throat singing subreddit "despicable shit" and "fucking evil" and how you are "literally shaking right now" because they pointed out that pokemon existed in the 90s, you could provide more examples of American things that Americans enjoyed in the 90s?

Pro Wrestling? That was huge around the world especially towards the end of the 90s with the NWO/Attitude era and monday night rating wars and ECW doing crazy hardcore shows all the time.

Too "multicultural", nobody was ok with gays back then, they talk like it's the 2010s, even the "Whites" on the show are all mixed, adult actors smoking pot is funny - kids actors aren't, the writing sucked, the acting sucked, your mom sucked... dick, etc.
>>
>>217430262
Toronto got a steady stream of Hong Kong refugees fleeing the colony before China took back over. Understandable.
>>
>>217430262
You were 8 years old in 1999 and that's why your dumb ass associates the 90s with Pokémon. The anime boom in the US started in the late 90s when Toonami started airing, not in 1995 when this show was set and anime sure as fuck was not universally popular in the late 90s either.
>>
>>217430377
>kids actors aren't
those are 25 year olds
I think the original cast was younger back then.

NTA but sailor moon was first aired in 95 in the US. The first season and first dub of the original Dragon Ball came out in 95, the first DBZ dub in 96. Neon Genesis Evangelion was released to American audiences in 96. In the 80s, Transformers was a joint American-Japanese venture to sell Japanese toy designs.

There's also non-animated Japanese media like Power Rangers.
>>
Goofy faces, bad actors, shitty script.

Any other questions?
>>
>>217429895
None of that shit took off until the 00's and even then it didn't dominate culture the way you claim it does. I was born in the 70's and actually did watch anime in the 90's in the form of Manga Entertainment VHS dubs of OVAs and it was incredibly niche and weird to normies. Mainstream 90's culture was The Simpsons, Beavis and Butthead, Friends, Tarantino and Michael Bay movies, Saved by the Bell, Doug, etc
>>
>>217431703
Bevis and Butthead and that shit was never on the air in Canada in the 90s.
>>
>>217431742
So you grew up in a weird bubble and are projecting it on wider society?
>>
>>217429525
What the fuck is this? I literally can't tell the race of anyone in this pic. Is this AI?
>>
>>217431757
All i'm saying is that in toronto , canada during the 90s Asian culture dominated literally everything else.
>>
>>217429895
That 80's Show sucked for a similar reason. It was the progenator of modern popslop society and they reference the bare minimum
>>
>>217431886
No, you originally said North America, when you meant your classmates from your suburban subdivision of Toronto.
>>
>>217429895
That stuff is all late 90s/2000s. The early to mid 90s was dominated by Batmania, Bartmania, and Turtle Mania. In that era kids cared about wrestling, Beavis and Butthead, grunge, rock, and believe it or not young people actually liked the Sandler/Hartman/Lovitz era of Saturday Night Live.

spbp, horrible cast

Get one girl that looks like Buffy, one Chris Masterson and whatnot, and you got a good show.
>>
>>217429525
Not enough diversity
>>
>>217432832
True, none of them had a BMI under 30.
>>
>>217430262
>I grew up in the 90s in Toronto Canada
Ew
>>
>>217429525
The best part of the 90's was the lack of forced diversity.
>>
The whole point of that 70s Show was that it was just Happy Days set in the 70s.

There's a millions 90s shows they could've ripped like Saved By The Bell but decided to make this weird show of a zoomer writers idea of what the mid 90s were. That 70s Show first season forced a bunch of references because they didn't think they would get a S2. This show didn't even try either, so it just felt like a show that was telling you, "This is the 90s" but nothing fit.

Cast also sucked. That 70s Show cast was likable enough to make the show work.
