this kinda sucked.

not trying to be edgy but why does this have such a cult following again?

dumb people being baffled by the big lebowski is a tale as old as time. you're a mongoloid, that's why.

the movie bombed at box office and for good reason. reddit can’t explain what’s good about this movie, instead they will say it’s good, you just don’t get it
>>
>>217430893
That's alright it's not for everybody but it's revered for it's satire of detective noir films, it's quotable one liners, offbeat characters, and in my opinion it's cult status since it wasn't a hit when it came out people who have always liked it even before it's later reappraisal from critics kinda hold it in a special place, anyway happy painting and God bless.

>>
>>217430893
It was something unique when it came out. It was a nice change. Problem is that people who really liked it wouldn't shut up about it. That lead to a hype cycle, which if you kept hearing about, would make you think it was the greatest thing ever, which it certainly isn't. Without the hype, it's an ok movie.
>>
Films age. For popularity you have to take in account the year (and social context) it was released in order to enjoy the mood, the vibe of 1. the trashy kind of usa at this time and 2. the jabs at film making at this time. Some modern viewers are capable of this some not. An extreme example is that it's perfectly ok to not like classics from the 50s un 2026, but some will like it.

For the blogpost I liked it as a teen because of cheap fun, and was bored to death 10 years later. Also isn't it in the top 5 of films where they say the most insults? Gotta check that.

i like the film but i see through it's edginess now
it's honestly a rather subversive film with lots of overt woke/weird shit, but it was done at a time when plausible deniability via irony was still a thing

Jeff Dowd worked on 'Fern Gully' and 'Delgo', though he ended up disavowing the latter when it was a massive flop. The version of him in 'The Big Lebowski' was a bit of an exaggeration in the slacker department.

Yeah that's probably the case.
I think the film is ultimately about losers. Pretty much every character is a loser.
The Dude is a jobless bum who just sort of floats through the plot in the same way he floats through life. He has his own sort of internal philosophy that doesn't really hold up to scrutiny, and I think the writers of the film are on record stating that the Dude was never meant to be this icon of a lifestyle. I think if they knew what the film's reputation would go on to be they wouldn't have made it, the same way that if Lovecraft knew his work would be reduced to "dude Cthulhu lmao" he probably wouldn't have written that particular short story.
The appeal in the film is watching a series of losers fail. Basically every character shouldn't be in this movie, shouldn't be playing the role in the plot that they are, but they're navigating through it anyway. The same is true to life, you will encounter an endless succession of people in positions they shouldn't be in (either positions of authority & wealth they don't deserve or suffering & woe they don't deserve), or you'll meet people like Jesus or the Nihilists who lean into being the heel against the world that they feel has wronged them/owes them something, when in reality we all end up like Donald (dead) and our life & legacy is ultimately reduced to who we were at the end with who we were around at the end & who we're remembered by.
There's a lot I didn't touch on that has to deal with sexuality/womanhood vs. manhood/ect., the film takes on different meaning depending on your personal mindset/how you approach it which is what the best art does.
Only the surface level Reddit retards cling to "the Dude lmao" or stuff like that. It's the kind of movie where the rug can be a literal rug on one watch and it could be an object of deeper meaning/importance on another.
Try rewatching it later in life.

the joke with the notepad (to my understanding), other than >>217431492, is that for the entirety of the film up until now the dude shows absolutely fuck all initiative, stumbling from one situation to another through a combination of basic self-preservation and chance. Suddenly here, for the first time, he shows a modicum of creativity, gets off his ass, and tries to do something clever and unexpected. And he's met with a dick drawing. It's basically the universe laughing at his single attempt at not being a useless bum.
