Why were the subsequent two Lord of the Rings movies, while being very good movies, unable to capture the SOVL of Fellowship of the Ring?
>>
>>217436296
Jackson decided to insert his own thing in the last two movies instead of closely sticking to Tolkien's text as he did in the first
>inb4 Tom Bombadil
a few trims were necessary
>>
>>217436296
Battle scene is dragged out and hollywoodized in two towers and overabundance of CGI in returm
>>
Large scale CGI battles in broad daylight that looked like shit.
Criss crossing between too many samey characters (Eomer, Faramir)
Going for DUDE EPIC & suffering of characters rather than cozy adventures.
Oh and Gollum fucking sucks and is just as bad as Jar Jar.
>>
>>217436742
it’s true. all of it.
>>
>>217436296
TTT has the most soul. Fellowship is like an action movie with PS1 CG. Watching the Moria sequence makes me die inside. Most of the stuff people like about Fellowship happens before Rivendell or otherwise takes about 5 seconds (like Boromir's death, which was rushed).
>>
>>217436296
it turned to quippy capeslop
>>
Howard Shore's music becomes overblown in the sequels. It's constantly straining for grandeur, but its main effect is to irritate the human ear.
>>
>>217436296
I thought Two Towers was by far the best if not downright perfection but the only drawback is that Return was only ever going to pale in comparison
>>
>>217436296
The long epic battle sequences, massive CGI armies, etc. Fellowship had a smaller scale fantasy adventure feel that the two sequels lacked.
>>
>>217436764
Seek help, freak. Fellowship is 10/10 kino from beginning to end. TTT was utterly ruined by Hackson changing the story and characters in favor of all the utter garbage he made up.
>>
>>217436742
This, but Gollum is good.
>>
>>217436296
Because you entered pubescence by then
>>
>>217436764
If you think it's rushed in the movie, don't read the book. That whole battle sequence lasts like one paragraph
>>217436807
Cave troll knocks it down by half a point thoughever
>>
>>217436603
fotr didn't stick to the text that closely. it's not 17 years between 111 birthday and the quest, there's no wizard telekinesis battle, there's no cave troll battle, the balrog doesn't have wings, arwen isn't an action hero, aragorn isn't a cuck that refuses the call, saruman can't summon thunderstorms, huge parts of the council of elrond are cut, the barrow wights

fotr is just as sloppy an adaptation as the other two
>>
>>217436296
Best captures the comfy high fantasy aesthetic of going on a grand adventure with a group of different people with the same goal.
>>
>>217437327
Most of those changes are to the film's benefit, shaving off 17 years to add forward momentum to the narrative being the best example. Arwen is barely an action hero, she has one scene where she does something cool (no unrealistic combat moment, they even cut her out in helm's deep) and the balrog isn't worth addressing or I might catch secondhand autism

you just love the shire too much. but if they just stayed in the shire the whole time there wouldnt be a story

It's just the nature of trilogies and storytelling in general. The first act is mysterious and you slowly get introduced to the characters and what's going on. It can take its time and there's a lot of wonder and amazement. That vanishes in the next act where plot has to move and payoff things setup before, now setting events for the third act finale. Most mystery is gone except for how it will all come together to win/lose the day. There is no more Moria or accidentally running into a Balrog. The Elves are no longer mysterious or event present. About the only thing is exploring Mordor and it's just a spooky barren hellscape

>I might catch secondhand autism
the things you complain about in the second two movies are the exact same thing the whole topic is arguing about adaptation of a fantasy book. there is categorically no non autistic way to discuss it. there's nothing about "faramir is too much of a jerk" or whatever that's neurotypical
>>
>>217437789
The things I complained about influence the tone and execution heavily, nitpicking over whether a cosmic demon entity has metaphorical wings or literal ones is neurodivergent to its absolute core
>>

SOVL

>>
>>217437407
>>217437836
Ok but are the wings literal or not?
>>
>>217437997
I don't care to dig through Tolkien's letters to his gay lover or whatever to figure out if they were intended to be literal, it's inconsequential and you can interpret it however you like. That's good literature for you
