In my humble Opinion a gritty ,,military sci-fi" (or at least adjacent to one) simply doesn't work for Star Wars, the setting is inherently fantastical and doesn't lend lend itself for serious stories.
Rogue One is only liked because it didn't tread on the same typical star wars formula and everything which came out after it sucked ass, but other than that it's a mediocre film at best. The colour scheme is bland, none of the characters are interesting and the plot is just an overglorified generic macguffin fetch quest with a few decent action scenes playing in the Background.
Hence why the only talling point about the movie is the darker tone. Rogue Ond fans are so desperate to portray their addiction to a family-focused space opera franchise as mature and well written they will latch onto anything which is not Rebels-tier writing. Barely better than the other kind of star wars fans who are overwhelmed by emotional distress when their favourite character Glub Shitto gets a cameo.

Same Anon, if you want a darker star wars story, read the Darth Bane books. Not high art either, but thry manage to adapt a much more mature take while still staying truthful to the spiritnof the setting. The new Thrawn Trilogy besides the 2nd book is decent too.
