>>217460205Well, you can't pin the "Ferengis are Jews" on anybody specifically because Roddenberry just wanted them to be "Yankee Traders" at first but that's a super esoteric historical niche that most people don't get at all, so obviously they needed to change the race to make them more interesting. They flopped hard in early TNG, I don't think anybody liked them.And from the Yankee Trader thing, well, making them greedy bastards obsessed with economics was kind of a logical pivot. It's more like Roddenberry's original idea had already tethered them to a commercial identity which limited what the other writers could do to make them more interesting, so they just went all in on it which, well, was an unfortunate coincidence with the make-up.

They have some weird bartering dynamics in their culture but still, mostly just "weird looking horny aliens" which is a very Roddenberry kind of thing.Like I said before, I don't think anybody is really to blame for how they end up. The later TNG/DS9 writers didn't really have too many places to take them. They could make them hornier but given how disgusting they looked, they would never be taken seriously as villains. So they embraced the economic side and played them for comedy instead and ultimately, it was a much better thing for them that gave them a unique identity.
