If this were made today, everything would be CGI, but they would be spending the same amount of money, so the talent would be spread thin and look worse.Also, the contrast is much higher than in most modern films. The shadows being very dark and the highlights being very bright helps hide the fact that it is CGI. The very low contrast HDR look of most modern films also has the effect of making even real things look like shitty CGI, which is the biggest problem.
