The shadows being very dark and the highlights being very bright helps hide the fact that it is CGI. The very low contrast HDR look of most modern films also has the effect of making even real things look like shitty CGI, which is the biggest problem.

He reused a bunch of plates from previous movies' stunt sequences he really liked and was proud of and gave rock solid concrete artistic design instructions to the CGI crew so everyone was on the same page from the jump. When the effects house isn't being forced to do full ground up reworks of the sequences a dozen times including 3 or 4 in an end of post production crunch because the execs are being wishy washy and don't know how they want the scene to look, you can get some really really good results.
