How can their society function when all they communicate with is stock sentences? How do they conduct any sort of thing with precision? How do they develop sciences? If they understand what individual words in the sentence mean, then by using basic reasoning they can reformulate these phrases to just "reinvent" their language again. It makes no sense whatsoever.
>>217461951In retrospect I really appreciate the caliber of writing in this episode, especially at the end where the viewer understands the conversation between Picard and the alien crew. That said, when I first saw this episode I spent the whole time fuming about how stupid and nonsensical that language is.
How did they ever tell these stories in the first place if their entire language is based on repeating things other people have said first? Someone had to tell the original story of Darmok and Jalad, but how could he?
>>217462039It kind of makes sense since even right now people started mostly communicating in internet lingo and memes. But that kind of casual exchange of shorthands is much different than a language necessary for scientific progress and so on
>>217462111You really don't understand how certain pieces of cultural knowledge can can become a shortcut to refer to more complex concepts? They clearly would have used a bunch of older references to describe the darmok story the first million times until it became something everyone knows, kinda like how when I reference OP everyone knows I mean a cum sucking faggot retard
>>217462111Well in the episode we see Picard and the alien dude establish a new phrase with the two of them included.
OP's mother, on a Saturday night.
Pewdiepie, on the bridge
>>217461951Right now everyone in this thread is communicating without even saying one word to each other. Literal silence, yet we've found a way. Their way works for them. Just because you don't think it works doesn't mean it couldn't
>>217461951CIA, his legs wide.
>>217462111>Krug! Grag! Krug Grag!>Krug Grag!
>>217461951I always interpreted it as the universal at m translators just translate their language into the metaphors without any nuance so it would make more sense without that degree of separation.
>>217461951I assume they have numbers and measurements. After that science is just expounding on what came before so it would fit their language perfectly. We have so many scientific principals that are shorthanded with a guy's name and his discovery.
>>217461951>How do they conduct any sort of thing with precision? >How can their society function They don't and it doesn't
How can /tv as a board function if all we communicate with is stock sentences?
>>217462687Do you feel in charge?
Xochee, when the seat fell.
>>217462687
>>217462687It would be very painful.
>>217462111They probably have a base form of the language that has overtime become extremely subverted by allegory. Or their brains work differently and the universal translator is making it look retarded to us.
Bane, the plan in motion.
