I'm a huge David Lynch fan and even I have to admit that inland empire might have to be his worst film. The whole thing just feels very amateur and unfinished. Lynch experimenting with the DV camera just didn't look that good. The story makes no fucking sense whatsoever and 3 hours is way too fucking long. The movie really starts dragging around the two hour mark. I agree with you on this one. I have no idea why inland empire is so praised.
