If it was just CGI makeup then Avatars would be produced cheaper and faster, not needing 3+ years of post.
Huge numbers of things in those movies besides the main characters are animated without mocap data, and performance capture is still a form of animation.

It's really not learn about motion capture and performance capture and then learn about animation. The motion points of performance capture has millions of metadata that needs to get transferred and thats way before anything even hits the rendering stages, then add in the 3D elements which is data taken from specially engineered cameras Cameron made and you're talking about data that surpasses any marvel film million times over.
