I calculated Avatar ROI
Formula ROI = (Box Office − Budget) / Budget

Avatar
Budget: ~$237M
Box office: ~$2.92B
ROI: ~1,132%

Once-in-a-generation phenomenon. One of the most profitable films ever made.

Avatar: The Way of Water
Budget: ~$350–400M (assume ~$375M midpoint)
Box office: ~$2.32B
ROI: ~519%

Still massively profitable, but ROI dropped by more than half compared to Avatar (2009).

Avatar 3 (assumed)
Budget: ~$350M (likely similar to Avatar 2)
Box office: ~$1.5B (assumption)
ROI: ~329%

Very successful in absolute terms, but continuing decline in return .

Avatar’s box office remains massive, but each sequel earns less profit per dollar as budgets rise, showing clear diminishing returns. This mirrors the Star Wars sequel trilogy and Jurassic World, where every film still crossed $1B but delivered weaker ROI and declining enthusiasm
>>
Meet the Parents was around ~6× ($55M ~$330M).

Airplane! was insane at roughly ~45–50× ($3.5M ~$170M).

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was about ~8× ($12M ~$95–97M).
>>
Paranormal Activity
~$15k ~$193M
ROI is almost absurd

The Blair Witch Project
~$60k ~$248M

You've neglected filming overlaps between the sequels which reduces overall budget. Your point still stands obviously, but its kind of moot when you weight up there's only 2 more movies. It seems on trend that Avatar 5 will still make a profit even with a declining ROI, but historic data projections also indicate that it being the final instalment will increase its ROI dramatically.

Overall, what you're saying is correct - and I'm aware you didn't actually pose a conclusion to what you outlaid - but you're kind of implying the movies are not good investments when the exact opposite appears to be true

Blah blah blah… Jurassic park makes non stop sequels, transformers makes sequels on losses, marvel films have been flopping for 10 years straight and done like 10 consecutive flops, Disney films flopping…

Don’t care give me more avatar

He focuses on spectacle but there's an autistic attention to detail that separates his stuff from blockbuster crap with sloppy CG that was outsourced to Malaysia and India

Determination, plain and simple. He ignores the people saying you can't do it. He ignores the people saying it will cost too much. He ignores the people saying no one will want to see it. He has a vision and he executes it. You can just do things when you stop worrying about what other people say

So hollywood doesn't lie about their budgets now?
