The greatest American horror film and it's really not even close.

I wouldn’t really call Jacob’s Ladder a traditional horror film.

Second only to Alien

The Exorcist came out basically within the year and also perfectly encapsulated the other major departments (psychological, spiritual, slow). Exorcist is the actual competition, but they cover very different areas. But yes, TCM is a perfect film. It uses a good six minutes or so of its opening time extremely efficiently, layering various kinds of language (narration, text, music/ambience, basic credits information etc etc) while advancing the feel of the whole thing.

>>217481320
Yeah despite it being labeled a slasher there's really nothing else like it, I also love that for how simple it is there's about 20 different essays you can write about it's contents.

It’s The Exorcist and it isn’t even remotely close

That's not The Thing.

TCM was the Blair Witch of its time, an indie sensation that came out of nowhere and shocked everyone. The Exorcist is peak polished Hollywood horror.
>>
>>217481542
Both movies are downright demonic effortlessly and no other horror movie compares, shining maybe
>>
>>217481542
People were fainting in the theater of Exorcist showings. TCM doesn’t have anything on Exorcist in terms of shocking the audience lol
>>
>>217481676
BWP is more about paranoia than anything demonic imo, there's a reason we feel panic from seeing the characters panicked
>>
>>217481716
People probably fainted or ran out of the theatre for tcm they just didn’t have the shitting in capitol city budget for marketing like the exorcist had. Plus the christcuck shit was 90 percent why people were freaked out by the exorcist
>>
>>217481479
The Exorcist is great but held back by a few edgy moments, I'm not even religious but stuff like the crucifix masturbation was shock value for shock value's sake and not on the level as the compelling theological stuff throughout
>>
>>217481743
>Probably
That means it didn’t happen.
Also it’s a movie about demonic possession. If someone genuinely believes demons and Jesus and Heaven are real how is that any different or cheap compared to playing into instinctive fears of the unknown, and being in an unfamiliar place completely vulnerable
>>
>>217481743
the exo deals with deeper existential takes, so first place and tcm second.
>>
>>217481732
No one’s talking about Blair fag project. I meant exorcist and tcm
>>
>>217481804
Meant to reply to the post above lol

I like the Thing, i thought it was interesting that one movie reviewer says Thing is "the most unloved monster of film". Cause people love characters like Leatherface, Ghostface and those Universal monsters, but not Thing
>>
>>217481794
I've shown Texas Chainsaw Massacre to people for years, despite it being 50 years old and despite years of being desensitized by other usually gorier movies, almost everyone is horrified by it in ways they can't even describe. A common comment I get is that they felt uneasy or nervous from the start and couldn't explain why, point being if it's effective and scary to modern audiences, imagine how people in 1974 felt.
>>
>>217481863
The Thing is one of my favourite movies of all time. The critics who trashed it in 1982 can suck my cock.
>>
>>217481902
Yeah, it’s why I compared it to the Blair Witch Project. TCM feels realistic somehow, like you’re not supposed to be seeing this footage in a similar way to BWP.
>>
>>217481918
Carpenter's multi movie deal was thrown out cause of Thing's lousy reception, sucks soo bad.
>>
>>217481794
No it means they didn’t have the budget to make corny ads about people fainting in the theater
>>
>>217481946
Total critic death can't come soon enough.

>I would've totally gone against the grain at the time bro, I promise! Just like if I lived in nazi Germany I would've been one of the good guys!
>>
>>217482037
Or maybe people were just more shocked by The Exorcist
>>217481902
I’ve known people who don’t even want to talk about The Exorcist because they’re superstitious and shit
>>
>>217482162
depends if you were a 20yo or 60yo man who watched the film day of release
>>
>>217481320
Agree.
>>
>>217482162
>Pulls up Nazi Germany out of absolutely fucking nowhere
Jesus Christ go back.
>>
>>217481320
That would be Schindler's List

Like others have already said, it’s either The Exorcist or TCM. Those are the true heavyweight GOATs of American horror. There are COUNTLESS runner ups, but those two are the “Mt. Everest” of American horror.
