The movie already had surreal stuff in it, abstractions with all those jewish inserts akin to stuff in A Serious Man such as the Holocaust flashback or the dog being named Moses. It also wouldn't be the first time a Safdie went full surreal, this is a bit of a spoiler for one of their movies but: in Daddy Longlegs there's a dream sequence where a character fights a huge mosquito. And Benny also wrote The Curse.
