Why does Conan the Barbarian get talked about as just another cheesy 80's action movie with mostly 7/10 reviews? It's a movie with a vision and it executes it flawlessly, you can tell everyone was on the same page. So what does this movie lack to be considered an all time great?
>dialogue too simple
Yes, that's what makes it great, it fits the movie perfectly
>plot is simple
Yes, it should be simple, it's the hero's journey, it's like saying the Iliad is too simple, it's an adventure
>arnold's acting was bad
Fits perfectly with the character
>didn't stay true to the comic book character
Who gives a fuck

>Why does Conan the Barbarian get talked about as just another cheesy 80's action movie with mostly 7/10 reviews?
Stupid shit happening during the ending fight (the love interest appearing as a ghost, goofy slapstick stuff) makes you kind of emotionally detach.from the plot.
>>
>>217485287
Conan was underrated in its time, it sure as shit is not now.

>Muh proto capeshit is actually kino dude, trust me.
Pathetic. In fact, I can't think of a single capeshit with acting as bad as this movie.
>>

>It's a movie with a vision and it executes it flawlessly
yeah and that vision is to be a cheesy 80s action movie.
>>
>>217485905
>the love interest appearing as a ghost
you literally didnt understand the movie
>>
>>217485933
I consider it underrated because nobody considers it a top 5 movie OAT, most people don't even consider it the best Arnold movie. Probably because the plot and characters aren't too complex or deep, but for me it shows there's more to a movie's greatness than just the writing.
>>
>>217485955
No skin off my back, it's not a test.
>>
>>217485972
>underrated because nobody considers it a top 5 movie OAT
Because they're not cringe manchildren.
>>
>>217485953
Not really, the movie takes itself seriously and forces you to take it seriously. It doesn't denigrate its own themes for the sake of humor like a lot of other movies, especially more modern movies, and it sticks to the story of the masculine epic hero perfectly, with music that elevates its grandiosity and grusome combat that makes it feel real.
>>
>>217486001

he actually has one of his finest acting moments in a deleted scene. it was restored with the dvd release though. shouldve kept it in from the beginning, I think it really rounds out subotai as well

There's nothing below the surface though. Everything in the movie is to be taken at face value, it raises no questions and has no remarkable references.
>>

My favorite part is when Conan and Subotai run off into the sunset with Theology/Civilization playing in the background. It's very comfy.

I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and assume this is sarcasm even though it could just as easily be unironic
>>
>>217486208
Pretty much everywhere, imdb, rotten tomatoes, reddit, youtube, everything I looked up about the movie treats it as just a cheesy 80's movie.
>inb4 you're a retard for using these websites
They all suck the balls of other great movies, but this one they kinda minimize. Probably because it's about masculinity and the will to survive rather than some faggy ass overly complex tranny slop that insists upon itself.
>>
>>217486260
>Probably because it's about masculinity and the will to survive
its about a guy who develops big muscles during a timeskip being an action hero. it's standard power/validation fantasy schlock with a good V.O. and monologue bit at the start.
>>
>>217486260
It's toxic masculinity. For examples of positive masculinity look at Waymond from Everything Everywhere All At Once.
>>
>>217486282
>it's standard power/validation fantasy schlock
no you're just poorly read
>>
>>217486260
There are many great movies that get like a 6.6 on review sites. I guess Conan is in a way surprising since it is a classic at this point. I suppose there haven't been enough youtube videos explaining the movie since it requires the smallest bit of thought to understand what the movie is saying.
>>
>>217486259
Anything but actually proving my point wrong.

>>217485287
I agree. Actually prefer this one film to the entirety of the Hobbit for example.
>>

>>
>>217486346
Lol, I can tear you from limb to limb.
>>
It was made in an ancient time where filmmakers were allowed to take risks. Also the sequel sucked so that probably didn't help its reputation.

>>
>>217486346
As I said, anything but actually proving my point wrong.
If you believed your own bullshit about Connan having "le finer points" you would be able to spit out at least something other than deflection and bitchiness.
>>
>>217486299
I'm not the guy you replied to, but there are a lot of themes in this movie
>brutality of humanity, especially in its more primitive stages, might makes right etc.
>conan's will to survive and thrive, not allow himself to die
>the riddle of steel, and how at the start Conan gets given the answer, steel you can trust, but eventually he does find companions, and he also realizes it's not the steel itself but the human will that makes him strong
>thulsa doom, by killing Conan's people, also gave him his will and strength
The movie isn't overly complex, it's not really trying to argue about anything, but under the surface it has really strong themes that it carries just through action instead of much commentary
>>
>>217486377
See this is what I am talking about. Men watching awful films like conan end up as insecure, petty and mean spirited individuals like yourself. No wonder modern men have a loneliness epidemic. They've been immersed in toxic and destructive garbage.
>>
>>217485287
It's not ashamed of itself, and a lot of faggots, especially millennials, can't relate to that.
>>
>>217486405

Yeah, a lot of more modern hero movies feel like they must do commentary on and satirize the concept of the hero, and the audience is insecure in projecting themselves into the hero's shoes because they are all faggots
>>
>>217485287
It's a great movie, finally watched it fully a year ago and I gotta say it's been a long too long in fact time where a movie gave me that old nostalgic childhood classic fantasy feeling.
It also reminded me how much I missed the old sound and visual quality the older movies had unlike the special effect slop nowdays.
It's such a shame that the second movie wasn't as good, but even that one had one good part in it, that tomb scene felt like the original film and was as enjoyable.

I've never met anyone who thinks this is a 'cheesy action movie', pretty much everyone has agreed its a metaphor and suprsingly moral film about will and its power.
>>
>>217486427
>but there are a lot of themes in this movie
I never denied the existence of themes.
I'm just saying there's nothing "under the surface", and there isn't, the movie is to be taken at face value and is not metaphorical, allegorical, satirical or in any way intended or particularly suitable for complex interpretation of any kind.
You can overanalyze anything and project some kind of deeper meaning, including the banner gifs on 4chan, but that doesn't mean there's anything actually in there.

>>217486441
>I just wanted you to know that there is something elusive that you're too retarded to notice
I don't trust you and have no reason to trust you as you're rude, stupid, and constantly running away from the point.
You should've picked a better movie to posture about secretly being deep and not just your socially acceptable outlet for gay fantasies.

Self-awareness is a trait of the sophisticated mind. When you're well read and seen enough movies, this kind of earnestness and melodrama in what is otherwise a simple minded movie. So a wink to the audience here and there telling them they're in on the joke and yes they realise it's goofy allows them to assuage the guilt of watching crude films such as this.

Nobody understands Conan like I do . He's literally me. Except I'm a computer nerd NEET. that's the riddle of steel.
>>
>>217486505
And the fact that there's nothing allegorical, metaphorical, or satirical about it is what makes it great. Every movie nowadays has to try to wink at the audience, be a meta commentary about something, satirize some aspect of society or old traditions etc. It's more of a reflection of how humans have grown insecure in the concepts of good/evil, and masculinity and heroes, rather than this movie being bad.

Thinking self-awareness makes you above the common mind is a trait of the midwit, and of the insecure herd-minded. If you can't enjoy something at face value for the story it has to tell, and instead need it to denigrate something or itself, then you are insecure about what people think about you. You imagine that society would laugh at you if you were true to yourself and therefore must deconstruct and minimize your own desires. If you as a man can't see yourself in Conan's shoes, as a great hero that thrives through his own strength and will alone, then you are, sorry to say, a faggot.

because most if not all reviewers used to be fags (today there are also many hags); nothing wrong with that, but most certainly something wrong with people promoting and imposing the opinion of such degenerates (and in general the opinions of actors etc. who are practically whores)

Maximus is the kind of man who would conquer and use conan as a slave. That's more masculine and more true to the spirit of western civilisation.
>>
>>217486643
Gladiator is good but retroactively ruined by the sequel, should've been left alone. Northman is ok but too similar to Conan while having inferior overall elements like the soundtrack.
Braveheart is based on real history, granted it's heavily fictionalized, but not really an apt comparison to a fantasy movie.

NTA but it's literally the other way around. Conan starts out as a slave and becomes a conqueror king. Maximus dies at the hands of an Emperor who isn't even half the threat that Thulsa Doom is, and Conan easily beheads the latter.

I guess it's the same for Excalibur, but in the realm of low-fantasy movies, those are both among my favorites.
There's a pretty big deficit of such movies that aren't total shit, and basically one trilogy that is both high budget and well regarded, which is LOTR.
I guess Game of Thrones was somewhat acclaimed but I've always found it kinda mid.

LOTR is high fantasy. Conan is a prime example of low fantasy, even if it features some pretty outlandish things like Lovecraftian entities (both authors were friends and decided to have a shared universe of sorts). The bulk of Conan stories are rooted in scenarios that could happen irl.
