I gotta say, rewatching them as an adult and... it's almost as bad as capeshit. The first movie holds up incredibly well but these sequels are so much worse than I remember.

I mean they still have their moments and I can appreciate the production values but boy are they littered with bad decisions. Made me lose a lot of respect for Peter Jackson not gonna lie, until this point I excused the Hobbit because I heard how much his hands were tied with production issues he could not control but yeah, Two Towers and Return of the King are very much his fault. Maybe Christopher Tolkien was right all along when he said Jackson eviscerated his father's work.

This was my first time seeing the trilogy and I agree entirely, FotR told a compelling story and set up an adventure that just never happened. The following two movies were never ending battles and fake out deaths for about 7 hours. Exhausting.

that and the elves at helm's deep are such stupid decisions that completely undercut one of the main themes in the book
its now the age of men, and men shoulder the burden in the war of the ring. the elves and dwarves aren't useless but they're diminished to the point all they can do is hold on to what they already have.
there's one last supernatural hurrah with the huorns after most of the battle is over, and the pelennor fields is entirely won by humans. the strength and courage of humanity holds the line in gondor and then takes the fight directly to mordor to distract sauron so frodo can finish the job
>>
>>217578083
would have been kino. Sauron has a physical form in the book anyway

>littered with bad decisions

Such as? Not trolling either. I genuinely love discussion about the movie/book comparisons. I'm of the side that the majority of changes, additions, and ommitances used in the movies were for the better to fit the narrative structure of a movie. There are things I wish could have been properly done like portraying Faramir better and the Scouring of the Shire, but overall the changes didn't impact the very epic scale of the story being shown.

legolas shieldsurf and elephant parkour, dwarf throwing and bodycount quips, aragorn falling of a cliff, helm's deep elves, faramir and denethor character assassination, ghost army skull avalanche, gondor ghost ex machina, lighting the beacons, arwen hogging screentime, breadcrumb drama and frodo sending sam away, orc swallowing earthquake... not even a shire healing montage(I get the scouring would be too much but at least there should be an implications that it had been affected by all that went down in the outside world and our hobbit heroes were helping it get back)
just so much focus on fake tension made up garbage while leaving important shit out

do you reckon if the potter series is successful they will try a lotr series remake?
>>
“They eviscerated the book by making it an action movie for young people aged 15 to 25,” Christopher says regretfully. “And it seems that The Hobbit will be the same kind of film.”

This divorce has been systematically driven by the logic of Hollywood. “Tolkien has become a monster, devoured by his own popularity and absorbed into the absurdity of our time,” Christopher Tolkien observes sadly. “The chasm between the beauty and seriousness of the work, and what it has become, has overwhelmed me. The commercialization has reduced the aesthetic and philosophical impact of the creation to nothing. There is only one solution for me: to turn my head away.”

Ranking the movies,

Fellowship: Absolute kino. Whole shire act is the best part of the three movies. No retarded moments to speak of, except maybe the ringwraith scene sniffing them. It might be memorable or whatever, but it's still pretty retarded.

Two Towers: Pretty good. Every single scene with Theoden is kino (except one). The lead up to minas tirith is great. But the most retarded moment is the climax of the siege, with like 20 horses riding down a billion CGI orcs while Gandalf charges face-first into a wall of pikes that all raise right before the charge lands. The ents are pretty gay retard shit as well. In the books they're frothing with bloodlust, and their song as they march on isengard is based as fuck. They're not these whiny faggots that they are in this movie.

RotK: Pretty meh. Battle of Pelennor fields is still kino, but there's too much gay retard shit in this movie to really call is kino anymore. The army of the ghosts is gay retard shit. The Sam and Frodo plotline is gay retard shit (where they add tons of unnecessary scenes of things like Frodo thinking Sam is betraying him, etc., that are all just fucking boring). The army of Mordor being eaten by the earth is retard shit. Merry and Pippin getting the ringbearer ceremony despite not having been ringbearers. The WAR CRIME of killing the poor innocent Mouth. Etc. And yeah, the Eowyn scene is pretty gay and retarded as well. The same scene from the Bakshi rotorscoped one is way better. Not to mention the book scene is actually kino.

Living in the far north should be comfy tho

Nothing ever happens there
>>
>>217581899
they can't even physically fight in the books, and they never join the battle of minas tirith, it's all pure fanfiction
>>
>>217581992
That's what I mean. How can you be impermeable and at the same time solid? What's making them able to strike and kill enemies, and not be struck themselves?

Its bogus. Its genuinely an unfair plot device, which turns orcs into victims, which should never happen.

Its fun when orcs are ultra strong and so many and they have giant beasts and a giant wolf head battering ram and chanting and so on.

This also makes the struggle all the more real for the heroes, when faced with such extreme savagery and bloodlust. Oh well just cash in your checks at the ghost bank and make all the bravery pointless. Just shoot that green icbm at the enemy
>>

>>
>>217577790
I still love the trilogy, but this is true. The second and third movies are a slog to get through. The first movie is kino of the highest order, they put their entire souls into getting Fellowship to be good and it shows. You can tell they were completely exhausted and burnt out by the end of Return and so was I. Sometimes I'll just pop on Fellowship if I want to watch something comfy. The entire Mines of Moria arc is peak fantasy.

I am no longer able to force myself to watch Two Towers and Return of the King.
The feel like a slog with no wonder component that made Fellowship so great.
In Fellowship we go from peaceful green hills of Hobbiton to rainy dirty Brill, to swampy Eregion, to beautiful autumn Rivendell, to snowy peaks of Caradhras, to dark mines of Moria to golden Lothlorien to forests of Anduin.
In Towers it is just grass steppes for 3 hours.
Same with Return.
And the characters barely travel, they just talk and fight.
Surely story beats are here but between them are rather boring parts.
Fellowship feel the only one worthy of watching.
It is 10/10, while TT and Return are like 6/10.
