He couldn't rewrite the movie anymore and did his best to salvage the production with his known filmmaking touches.

She likes the new dynamic and when she happens to see rescue boats searching for them she doesn't try to get their attention and tells him that the area she saw them in is full of poisonous plants and to stay away. He hates being dependent on her and goes so far as to try and position her to escape on a makeshift raft. He fails and when he gets back she lightly poisons him with a paralyzing octopus and pretends like she's castrating him to scare him, and he finally falls in line. Shortly after his fiancee comes searching for him even though an official search has ended, and she bumps into the fiance first and pushes her off a cliff. Shortly after that, the fiance's body washes up on shore and the guy finds it. They have a knock down drag out fight across the island where he gouges one of her eyes out partially and she stabs him in the gut. While running during the fight he discovers an empty mansion on the other side of the island. She knew it was there the entire time and was stealing supplies from it while making it seem like she was finding food from the island. He tries killing her with a shotgun but she gets the upper hand and kills him with a golf club. Flash forward a year she's been rescued and become a celebrity after telling everyone she was the only survivor and has written a best selling book about it.That description makes it sound a lot more action packed than it is, it's actually very romcommy except that there's no turning point where the two stop hating each other.

At this point, Feige shohoerned in America Chavez and tons of other unrelated characters and Derrickson finally left the project. THEN they got a Rick and Morty writer to rewrite the movie for Raimi's new direction and the movie came out like it did

This version still featured Nightmare as an evil alt-Strange, America Chavez and Wanda pulling a heel turn in the third act as a sequel hook.Derrickson wanted more time to refine the script, but the production date had already been set, so he dropped out.Sam Raimi came on board to direct the Derrickson script with Michael Waldron, who wrote Loki, doing punch-ups.Production wound up getting delayed due to Covid, giving Raimi and Waldron time to rework the script pretty much from scratch. They dropped Nightmare in favor of having Wanda as a full-on villain from the start, and added the Illuminati as a sidequest.The movie was shot in sections due to Covid. They shot some parts, paused, then went back for more, and stitched it all together in post.During these downtimes, Raimi and Waldron kept rewriting the script to accomodate shifting schedules, changing plans, Covid restrictions, etc. Which led to some good stuff like the musical fight between Strange and his evil alter.Then test-screenings came back negative for the Strange/America dynamic which was the heart of the movie, so they went back and reshot most of their scenes together.Some other stuff Raimi shot has cut after test-audiences found it too campy/goofy.
