How can it have so little cultural relevance despite running for so long
>>
it permanently psyopped people into doing impressions of Billy West's Nixon voice instead of what Nixon actually sounded like
>>
>>217643494
As much as I love Futurama, most of the jokes are just pop culture references transmuted through a futuristic lens.
>>
Because only the FOX run was actually good.

The CC seasons were mediocre and the Hulu seasons were fucking putrid
>>
>>217643494
When you do things right, people won't be sure if you've done anything at all.
>>
>>217643494
It had four great seasons, an extremely long gap between revival where most people moved on, and then like 7 forgettable seasons.
>>
>>217643532
nailed it
It's not a bad formula, but it's still a formula, and that tends to make it feel a bit predictable and stale.
It's still a fun show but it's not a timeless classic like early Simpsons was
>>
Only the first few seasons were actually memorable and also their pretty damn dated to the late 90s/early 2000s like the episode where they explore the Internet and it still has a Windows 98 layout despite taking place in the year 3000
>>
>>217643514
Just like how most JFK impressions are Mayor Quimby impressions
>>
>>217643628
They also set up celebrities who were irrelevant by 2008 as being household names in the 31st century.
>>
>>217643581
>>217643599
It was still way more consistent than The Simpsons
>>
>in early 2000s show could have a race of super-smart negro basketball players as recurring characters
>some chuckled, nobody minded
it was a different time
>>
>>217643628
The Napster episode is the worst. No zoomer would have any idea what it was about.
>>
>>217643494
It's the stomp clap hey of tv shows
>>
>>217643714
It’s worse how Hermes suddenly became a main character for the Hulu seasons, when he was a two dimensional side character in the original run. They should have just made a new black character and kept Hermes in the background.
>>
>>217643494
It unironically insists upon itself. I say this as a fan
>>
>>217643494
It was always mid, hence being cancelled so many times.
>>
>>217643784
What? Hermes was always more than just a background character, but I do agree him being on Fry, Leela, or Benders level is weird
>>
>>217643707
Simpsons had 8-9 seasons where it was better than anything else on television and those shows are still so good they influenced virtually all animation and are still fondly remembered today.
Futurama wouldn't exist without the Simpsons and has maybe half as many good episodes as the Simpsons even if a majority of the Simpsons is mediocre and close to unwatchable.
>>
>>217643784
I swear there was a clause the WGA inserted that minority characters need to be represented more in tv shows now. Like even the King of the Hill reboot has a black character part of their gang now

I still think about this episode all the time. This specific quote stays with me a lot though. Honestly, in today's world, it's a pretty depressing quote the way I read it. It's something like "do a good job for the satisfaction of doing a good job but no one will give a shit or even notice."
>>
>>217643494
Because it reflected pop culture rather than create its own part of pop culture. Its a vulture picking over the bones of other tv shows that hit the zietgiest over 25 years ago, because Fry himself can't directly reference anything that happened after Fry got frozen as its not part of his lived experience. Sure they get round this by having another character say something like "Oh you know that historic event 1000 years ago..." Or having Obama or Trump appear in the Presidential section in the head museum, but Fry won't really make much of it.

As such, the show is only really relevant to people who grew up in the 80s and 90s now.
>>
>>217643826
You just wake up from a coma or something?
>>
The original run has tonnes of stuff people quote to this day
>Oh you're serious? Let me laugh even harder
>Hookers and blackjack

No one cares about any of the later stuff, because it's all so mediocre and forgettable.

This is the reason I can't really watch it. I just hate all of the characters. I find them more annoying than funny down to the last one. The only exception is Zapp who was literally written for the late Phil Hartman. Even if some of the humor is funny it's just ruined by this obnoxious cast for me.
>>
>>217645011
>I just hate all of the characters
Come to think of it, out of the main cast
Fry is a typical lazy-and/or-stupid-but-well-meaning-everyday-man character
Leela is stuck-up, organized, hard-working and empathetic to misfortune of others
Bender is a psychopath asshole, but not in a smart House MD way, just in a rude "haha you're dumb" way (which is fine but gets tiring much quicker)
Zoidberg is cowardly and poor I guess?
The rest is kinda just there.
>>
>>217643494
Because it sucks
>>
>>217643494
There are 22 year olds walking around who weren't even born when the last good episode of Futurama aired. Nobody cared when it was brought back because it was terrible, and the early seasons are endless pop culture references that nobody under 35 will get. It didn't have much else going for it like The Simpsons did. The entire emotional core of the show relied on the Fry/Leela romance that they teased for so long that people stopped caring. Every other character is one-note comic relief.
>>
>>217645161
Don't forget Bureaucrat Man but with unexpected accent or Smart Girl but drawn Asian.

>"Lethal Inspection" is the sixth episode in the sixth season of the American animated television series Futurama, and the 94th episode of the series overall. It originally aired on Comedy Central in the United States on July 22, 2010. In the episode Bender learns that he suffers from a terminal manufacturing defect, effectively rendering him mortal. Bender must cope with his newfound mortality and enlists Hermes Conrad's help to track down the mysterious quality inspector, Inspector No. 5, whom he blames for allowing him to enter the world only to die.

It only had a couple of really strong seasons more than 25 years ago that have aged horribly. Entire episodes are inaccessible to people born after 1999, imagine watching Lucy Lu bot without knowing who the fuck Lucy Lu is.

Shows come and go no matter how big they were. Have you ever watched Happy Days or Bonanza? They were some of the biggest shows of their eras that are totally forgotten now. Hell even most millenials don't know what Xena is even though it was at one point the most popular show on the PLANET.

The original run is ok but every subsequent revival just makes it worse and worse by trying to be more and more topical and Simpsons-esque, according to the writers the suits at Fox strong-armed them a lot to avoid making the show too weird or stupid and they hated them for it but ironically this seems to have caused the original run to be almost as legendarily good as a tv show can get, and ever since CC and Hulu gave them more freedom they just keep making stupider episodes like the one in which Bender's ass runs away or the 20 episodes we now have of Fry doing random shit like making tiktoks or binging tv shows.
>>
>>217649748
I think the Lucy Liu episode still works because it is not about Lucy Liu, it's about piracy and sex robots, all the viewer needs to know is that Fry downloaded a celeb into a robot to fuck her, it could be Lindsay Lohan or Scarlett Johansson or Sidney Sweeney, the episode would still be the same.
Compare that to the fucking eyePhone episode that is specifically tied to the early 2010s 99% of the time.
>>
>>217650087
would it work if you replaced lucy with Seth McFarlane? ;-)

>>217650110
No because nobody wants to fuck Seth McFarlane, but that's why you look for a current overrated celeb who is being presented by the media as the hottest bitch ever to play the role of the fuckbot.

That was purely because fans loved him. Then they ran it into the ground and eventually dialed his usage back because fans got sick of him. A lot of side characters on AD go through these boom and bust periods for some reason.
>>
>>217643494
Because the relevance it has has already been distilled into culture and now standardized. Futurama started the overeducated modern writer bit, but the catch is that they were actually educated.nunlike the modern crop of writers in Hollywood the staff held degrees in hard sciences and actual interest in subjects during the era where hobbies took effort and not a search and spending time in the community taught you to be part of it. This lead to the current crop of culture we have that is obsessed with references and more esoteric bits of scifact dribbled in shows. The catch is that modern writers are not actually intelligent and lack the wherewithal to write something intelligent and interesting.

trying to make leela fry's "one true love" was the dumbest move this show ever pulled
actually it was part of a long pattern of constantly trying to recapture the "glurge" glory of their hachiko ripoff episode
that one was a hit so they felt every season needed some kind of ridiculous forced pathos like they were trying to squeeze the last drop of emotion out of a dishrag

arguably that might've been production issues, in later seasons many times they were re-continued for just 1 or 2 seasons so they wanted to make a proper "end episode"

Original Run Futurama has plenty of lasting impact in pop culture. Comedy Central and Hulu Futurama are just throwaway content trash that proves that enough people doomstream Futurama to make it worth it to give Phil Lamar, Lauren Tom and Katey Segal work.
>>
First season was pretty rough, and everything after Fox was bad.
When airing It had the 6:30pm central death slot causing it to constantly start halfway into the episode or not even aired because a NFL game ran long. Really the only reason it's popular is due to Adult Swim.

I was listening to a podcast not that long ago where there was a physicist on the panel talking about how he was called up by Matt Groening for science advice cos they wanted to keep the show as plausible as possible. I think the only thing they said was that the science can't interfere with the comedy so obviously that meant things like FTL had to be possible. Was interesting.

I disagree.
It very deliberately made the science completely nonsensical to make it clear you weren't supposed to take it seriously.
The fact that some people did isn't the show's fault.

same anon that made >>217660387 post. they did actually put a lot of thought into keeping the science grounded in reality just with the caveat that if the science interfered with the comedy, the comedy would take precedent.

Cause The Simpsons tries to avoid injecting magic into their universe. That's why I thought the elf jockies was stupid. Sure for a Halloween gag it can work, but their universe now has an actual civilization of elves living underground who work as race jockeys.
