>Cosmopolis is the closest to a straight comedy… I feel like it needs to be seen in conjunction with A Dangerous Method, which IMO is completely straight and serious. They were made within a year of each other and both are his stylistic “Late Stage” so it really becomes clear how facetious and self-deprecating it is. So funny yet the ending is the most moving of his oeuvre for me. When Giamatti says to Pattinson that he wanted Pats to heal and save him, that stuck with me forever. But the whole movie before that is so silly and ridiculous. Sarah Gadon is the best performer in the movie, I feel like she, moreso than Pattinson and everyone else, knows what type of movie she is in… She says everything with a hint of a curled lip and smile, I think Rob thinks he’s doing an arty farty high-falutin’ movie but Gadon knows it’s a bit of a laugh.

What's so special about Meshes of the Afternoon anyways
I like the tall dark figure and the flower/knife/key symbolism and I appreciate the extremely basic production but was this really that groundbreaking in 1943? Didn't we already have superior surrealist films like 20 years earlier?

de palma is pretty mainstream, i wouldnt call that pseudcore. he excels in multiple genres and none of his films are truly boring. Cronenberg for example is hit and miss. Some are really good, some are slogs not worth defending, but his semi-realistic medical approach to horror is interesting enough to make even the shitty ones bearable. the rest of the list is fitting.

Frank Zappa and Scott Walker aren't obscure but they do have some very avant garde albums. Nara Leão is very funny, though. Have to guess the maker of the list just threw her on there because she sounded exotic without knowing how popular and accessible she is.

post-2000 some of Cronenberg's set dressing and 'look' feels a bit self-parodic, I'm happy with his past couple of screenplays but visually I preferred when he was drawing more heavily on naturally-occurring environments and product design to portray the weird and the eerie such as in Crash or Dead Ringers, it feels less hermetically sealed off from our real world and the depths of one's own heart

In another interview, he mentioned that it will once again explore the immigration process, this time from China to California. He is shooting the project on very rare eight-perf 65mm cameras. Corbet previously revealed that the project will be “experimental, elemental … about the body,” adding to its ambition, the story reportedly spans “150 years.”

>Godard: I put in Hitchcock because during a certain epoch, for five years, in my opinion, he really was the master of the universe. More than Hitler, more than Napoleon. He had a control of the public that no one else had.
(...)
>And something which is very astonishing with Hitchcock is that you don’t remember what the story of 'Notorious' (1946) is, or why Janet Leigh is going to the Bates Motel. You remember one pair of spectacles or a windmill — that’s what millions and millions of people remember. If you remember 'Notorious', what do you remember? Wine bottles. You don’t remember Ingrid Bergman. When you remember Griffith or Welles or Eisenstein or me, you don’t remember ordinary objects. He is the only one."

What are some films like Mishima and Querelle? I specifically mean the way the sets are done
>>
>>217664030
If you’re captivated by the hyper-stylized, theatrical artifice of Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters and Querelle, you're looking for "artificial cinema"—films that trade realism for meticulously crafted, stage-like environments and expressive color palettes.
>Stylized & Theatrical Environments
These films utilize soundstages and obvious sets to create a dreamlike or symbolic reality:
Kwaidan (1964): Masaki Kobayashi’s ghost story anthology is perhaps the closest spiritual match. It was shot entirely on hand-painted sets at a massive soundstage, creating a surreal, folkloric atmosphere.
The Ballad of Narayama (1958): Directed by Keisuke Kinoshita, this film explicitly adopts the aesthetics of Kabuki theater, with sets that change in front of the camera and highly expressive lighting.
Perceval le Gallois (1978): Eric Rohmer’s medieval adaptation is famous for its deliberately flat, artificial sets that mimic the two-dimensional style of medieval illuminated manuscripts.
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989): Peter Greenaway uses color-coded, ornate sets that feel like moving Renaissance paintings, with each room of the restaurant having its own distinct, saturated hue.
>High Stylization & Color Artifice
If the bold, unnatural lighting of Querelle is what you're after, consider these:
Caravaggio (1986): Directed by Derek Jarman, this film uses sparse, theatrical sets and chiaroscuro lighting to recreate the look of the eponymous painter’s work.
Tokyo Drifter (1966): Seijun Suzuki’s pop-art masterpiece features surreal sets and neon-drenched color shifts that prioritize aesthetic impact over spatial logic.
Lola (1981): Another Fassbinder film that serves as a predecessor to Querelle, utilizing romantic, highly saturated color schemes and artificial "Hollywood-style" lighting.
Dogville (2003): A more minimalist take on theatrical sets, von Trier filmed the entire movie on a bare soundstage with houses outlined in chalk on the floor

Lmao, Armond just gave Sorry Baby a positive review. This movie is like the quintessential progressive therapy flick. Mf wants to just be a regular progressive gay nigga but he can't. I'm surprised he only watched the movie just now tho. After making the Better Than list. The contrarianism is also very clear cause he reviewed negatively If I Had Legs I'd Kick You despite that movie very easily being susceptible to a conservative interpretation, because Rose Byrne got an Oscar nom, but Sorry Baby got ignored so he praises it despite the film being just progressive through and through.

So, I've come to the conclussion that incels are all volcels, but trvecels are all trvecels.
Basically, if you talk to women enough, you can't stay an incel forever, but most incels are volcels because they lack the confidence and balls to talk to bitches. Trvecels, on the other hand, are actually cursed with shit like speech impediments, deformities and other calamities which make them actually incapable of getting most, if any bitches, even if they had good personalities.
What are some trvecel / volcel kinos?

I've written about it some threads ago, maybe it was me. Joan of Arc is part of pop history, though, you must've heard or read something about her or the 100 years war.
Anyway, the film is based on the actual documents and records of her trial... You don't really need to know of it or the aforementioned Hundred Years War other than it was a struggle between England and France, that Joan had visions of God and received divine instruction to guide the French against the English and their allies, she accompained the troops, etc. In the last years of the conflict she was felled and taken prisoner to Rouen, where she had her trial and demise (and where the film takes place.)
