how and why did Korean cinema overtake the Japanese movie industry?
>>217777355By portraying correct revolutionary values, embodying the sprit of Juche and following the rules for good directing outlined by comrade Kim Jong-il in his work “On the Art of Cinema”.
>>217777410also by kidnapping good directors
What the average Korean person is willing to watch is less narrow and homogeneous in terms of structure. Not saying they're crazy open minded, more so that Japanese people are very autistic in what they watch. If it's too out of bounds it just flops. This obviously leaves very little room for directors bringing anything new or interesting to the table so there are a grand total of like 3-4 good working ones today if that in all of Japan. The rest make soulless romantic slop.
>>217777355Japanese cinema has never been good. Nor has chinese cinema. Korean cinema is unique in asia in its universal appeal
>>217777489Korean movies are really interesting in that even serious ones commonly have comedic bits. Like The Masquerade, for example. Japanese authors love to do the same thing in anime and manga, but I haven't seen it in their movies much. And yes, Korean movies definitely have interesting plots at least, they're not as cookie-cutter, the good ones at least.>>217777517I like old Japanese Yakuza movies, those are good.
