>>217778300I’ve been watching Alice In Wonderland with my kid a lot recently and it’s a really great movie. When I’m done the book I’m on now I’m going to buy the original Lewis Carrol book on my kindle and if it’s appropriate I’ll order a hardback copy to read to her. I love watching the movie and trying to figure out what all the symbolism is referencing. I’ve heard that a lot of it is supposedly about the changes in the field of mathematics going on in the late 19th century that the author thought of as silly nonsense, so it’s fun to try to understand what he was parodying. Also there’s lots of imagery from Celtic and Germanic folklore in the film, which I’m a nerd for, and it’s just an absolutely beautiful motion picture just to look at.
>>217778300The original Disney cartoons (Snow White etc) looked amazing because they were made in the Great Depression or just after it and there were loads of very talented artists who would happily work twelve-hour days for minimum wage because any job was a precious thing. You couldn't afford to make them now. Not entirely hand-drawn anyway. (Maybe with a few key artists and a lot of AI it might be possible.) But it's more than technique. The whole culture behind them is gone. No point going into details, coz "go back to pol", etc.

It’s motion capture animation like a video game and they never even bother to draw backgrounds (which is a common corner-cut on lots of baby shows). The show is supposed to be educational, but it isn’t, so I don’t let my kid watch it. But yeah put Toy Story 1 up against the art and animation in a modern episode of Pocoyo and Toy Story loses. >>217778405Toy Story 1 looks extra dated because it was made on a budget of only $30 million when every 3DCG film since has been made on at least $100 million. >>217778300Disney has gone though a bunch of different styles over the years to save time and money. They never recognized it as something the specifically wanted to do.

>>217778618If they were we would get animation like this, not spastic ADHD cut garbage
Reminder that basically every 3D Disney movie has a partially animated, line art sketch 2D animated version made for the sake of timing and guiding the final product. Instead of finishing that 2D version they just do CGI.
>>217778757>>217778870mmmm idk....idk man, MANY people are saying that this is peak
>>217778810That's... actually a really fair point anon, I didn't know that. I'd still like to see 2D style films though, nothing else looks quite like that imo. I'd also argue that a 3D production pipeline ends up being more expensive long term, because to keep pace with other studios you have to update to the latest and greatest and that means your film costs spiral, whereas for 2D you only need to invest in your production pipeline every now and then. Though maybe AI will change all of this.
>>217778815>audiences seem to prefer CGIthis is literally the cancer that is killing the media. you can make something fashionable again by doing it yourself. instead of spamming the same formulaic slop. and they wonder why people don't go to the movies anymore. being afraid to do something new (new also meaning bringing back something old in a new way, something that became a cliche but is not anymore because all the people that liked it forgot about it or are dead) will kill disney. and that's a good thing.
>>217778861They had a better reputation before the 2000s

>>217778936>I'd also argue that a 3D production pipeline ends up being more expensive long termit does. all the additional shit you need for 3d is overwhelming, modeling, rigging, texturing, particles, rendering etc.
>>217778815Audiences don't prefer CGI by default, they like that CGI films have significantly more detail than 2D, where even background characters on screen for 3 seconds have realistic furrows and crypts in the irises of their eyes, but putting that much detail into the everything costs 5x as much as hand animating the thing. If you just cloned a 2D film into 3D people would say it is the cheapest knockoff garbage they'd ever seen.
>>217778903JJK always looked like to me it was made for gays and women. All the men are drawn with extreme attention to detail and look unrealistically fancy, and all the women are drawn very plain and have down-to-earth designs.

>>217779994All the webms that anon linked are from the utterly butchered blu-rays. IIRC disney "remastered" their classic works from their silver editions onwards (I believe there was the silver, gold and diamond editions) and the remasters were done extremely lazily by the studio, who basically took the bucked tool in paint and clicked everywhere. You can see every single surface looks flat and with no depth, and there's no more linework visible or blur in the coloring (which was intentional, creating visual interest and depth). The intent was to make it look digitally animated which, obviously, defeats the entire purpose of hand animating and coloring, it literally shits on the artwork. To add insult to injury, disney does not and refuses to release the originals in the high quality that they have in vaults, so more able people who want to faithfully remaster the works ( for free) have to scrounge it up from old film reels that are extremely expensive in auction or very early vhs tapes, which are obviously very low quality as far as resolution goes. Basically it's like disney wanted to 8k their content today, delegated it to an indian studio in mumbai that ran it through a cheap 2x AI script and then disney deleted all their previous content and told you that "it always looked like that actually".
>>217778514>I’ve heard that a lot of it is supposedly about the changes in the field of mathematics going on in the late 19th century that the author thought of as silly nonsenseThat's my favorite thing, to see works of art as callouts of liars and cheaters. My favorite movie in that regard is the original Wizard of Oz, which I think calls out the single moms (munchkins are kids of single moms) and fake intellectuals (the Wizard). Look into the "Alice in Wonderland syndrome" described in psychiatry:https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29151098/Admittedly, psychiatry suffers from self-reporting and reproduction crisis, but I think it's worth looking into every aspect of the work if you're really into it.
>>217780525Also if you're at all interested there are blogs and whole websites dedicated to the comparison of the many versions of all classic disney movies (hand animated) with careful breakdowns and explanations on the whole thing
>>217780277Disney's always been making impulsive decisions like that. Sleeping Beauty was a flop that made $5.3 million on a $6 million budget on the initial release, and instead of recognizing that it flopped because it was a 70mm exclusive that 99% of movie theaters in the US didn't have the equipment to show, they said it was because it was a princess movie and princess movies are out of style. They made another 70mm-exclusive flop (The Black Cauldron) before they tried princess movies again.
>>217778618It looks like dogshit, i can't tell what's happening 90% of time
I know that people love to shit on anime, but I will always prefer it over most Western animation because the Japs at least try to do interesting things, even if they end up being bad. Camera angles, transitions, fight choreography, etc.. I still appreciate Disney for all they did, but I can't watch their movies anymore.
>>217780654Yikes. What happened on the right? AI?
>>217780705That's just Ufotable being Ufotable. Problem is that the average modern anime fan loves flashing lights. It's the only thing they care about.
>>217780711I loved anime when I was in my teens and 20s but now it all just feels like juvenile teenager media now. I still have some nostalgia for old 80s OVAs, though.
>>217778618Anime still looked infinitely better in the 90s. Animation just sucks globally for the last 20 years or so. Hopefully AI can save us from this shitty animation purgatory.
>>217778476Walt Disney literally didIt's called CalArts
>>217780759Anime is different now than it was back then
>>217780725that's the "remaster" it was done before modern AI. It's actually a very lazy filter and messing around with color settings. It's disgusting and if you're younger than 25 it's all you've ever know. You don't even know it CAN look like the left, the original work. Disney refuses to show the originals anywhere and doesn't acknowledge the quality drop.
>>21778079580s OVAs also had insane budgets and longer release schedules. Modern anime can look good, but a lot of studios just want to pump out as many anime as possible and they end up making garbage.
>>217778300these are different stylesbambi and snow white look plain and are boring as shitalice makes up for everything with it's creative designs and psychedelic scenessleeping beauty is one of the most beautiful movies of all time

>>217780801Gross. I imagine most old Disney films looked best on Laserdisc.
>>217778300Too time-consuming to do, therefore too expensive to do. Alice alone took over 2 million drawings to make if you count in all the storyboards, roughs, the inks and the finished frames. To make an animated film within reasonable time-frame like 1-2 years, you need to hire an army of animators to stay within deadline. Doesn't matter if you pay them minimum wage, shit is still going to be expensive.
>>217780848They would be plain and boring if they were animated using puppet rigs in Toon Boon Harmony
>>217780870the stuff in OP was mostly rotoscoped entirely, more frames doesn't mean it's better
>>217778744Keep telling yourself that
>>217780903>Later Disney films like Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland adapted a basic form of the rotoscoping technique – rather than projecting and tracing, animators simply watched scenes played out in live action in order to observe body movements and expressions.
Everyone who knew how to do this is dead
>>217780932That's what roto is, yeah. Anime rotoscopes too sometimes but those movies people claim are PEAK of animation from Disney are basically traced from real life. I mean i don't hate them but i think anime does more and better original sakuga. And the biggest point of all: Japan still does amazing 2d while the West completely dropped if for 3d.
>>217780903you don't know what rotoscoping is or how those movies were made. >>217780932Like this anon said, it was just to observe anatomy and even then only to get animators unstuck in some scenes or frames. If you had known what actual rotoscoping looked like you'd never suggest those disney movies used it
>>217780923White people in general have a thing for wanting to have sex with animals. I'm guessing it's passed down behavior from their ancestors growing up as poor farmers and only having livestock to keep them company.
>>217781022AIDS did start in Africa though :(
>>217778311Animation is completely dead, both in the west and the east.

>>217780994Disney did manage to perfect the art of rotoscoping tho. there's lots of more amaturish roto'd stuff out there that falls into the uncanny valley. Disney animators figured out the perfect blend of copying and stylizing, so that everything just moves nicely without just looking like an instagram filter
>>217780903>>217780994>That's what roto is, yeahNo its not. Rotoscoping is drawing directly on top of the live reference. Disney animators used live reels for reference instead. Not just to see how clothes like dresses flowed in movement but also because theater actors and dancers knew how to make cooler body language than middle aged men sitting on front of paper all day.Rigid objects in Disney films were rotoscoped, such as deer horns in Bambi, or Cruella De Vil's car. Those were cast into miniatures then photographed from every possible angle, then animators traced on top of the photos.

After that, it was just redoing Frieza and trying to make characters even more powerful, even though once you have characters that can casually destroy planets you're basically done. DBZ until the end of Frieza should be grouped with DB, because it is the natural end state. There was no real way to evolve past it. What's that, he's the legendary super saiyan now? Well actually there is super saiyan two and three and four and legendary super saiyan Broly! How is Broly different, well he's ACKSHULLY the legendary super saiyan! Even though the form of super saiyan was meant to be the legendary form... Oh, and Bardock also went super saiyan before Goku so it's not even that special! >>217781500>people calling out my low quality modern diarrhea clearly just hate all animefuck off
>>217781500Anime has always used a lot of cheap tricks because shows were designed for TV so both budgets and deadlines were much tighter. Absolute best animation in animes you only see in OVAs or full feature films.Otherwise Japan and Korea are the bastions of "traditional style", mostly because lazy americans have relegated the brunt of the animation work to Asia since early 90's. Not a single western cartoon show in the past 20 years that didn't offshore Inbetweening to koreans, taiwanese or japs.
>>217781230Music Box Theatre in Chicago.Apparently there are only a few 70 prints still existing so Disney is pretty conservative of when they share them with theaters.
>>217778300Because anime basically covers everyone’s 2D animation needs, whether you like it or not. I don’t make the rules, it’s just that Disney and other 2D film studios are dead or switched to 3D cause it’s “The future”
>>217778517Animators were even better paid than today at Disney. Back in 1941, Art Babbitt was on the modern equivalent of 400k.
>>217780277Crazy how public opinion flipped against animation just in time to reject a black princess before immediately flipping back to liking animation
>>217781592A lot of that was from Disney competing against the Fleischer brothers, he sniped a ton of talent from them because they both paid and treated their animators like shit.
>>217781520Watch more than seasonal trash

>>217781551The current TAG union minimum for inbetweeners is $45.42/hr. During the 1941 animator strike they were paid $12 per week, when adjusted for inflation that comes to about $6.80/hr. Modern Japanese inbetweeners are paid a piece rate which averages $8/hr when converted to USD.
>>217781165How the fuck do you animate something like this?
>>217778517>The original Disney cartoons (Snow White etc) looked amazing because they were made in the Great Depression or just after it and there were loads of very talented artists who would happily work twelve-hour days for minimum wage because any job was a precious thing.Thats the funny thing. Disney didn't hire already established artists, they hired people straight off the street. The only requirement was willingness to learn and willingness to draw endless amount of pictures. Disney legends like the creator of Pluto had 0 drawing experience when he was hired to the studio. Because Disney itself was a pioneer of animation, they had to train their own workers themselves so they had both training period before actual job and they built cheap condo apartments for their workers right next to the studio.Art and animation are not something only "talented" can do. Animation especially requires people who treat it like a proper job that requires lot of patience because animating in ones or twos means every single second of animation requires 12-24 drawings to be created. So 10 seconds of animation is 120-240 drawings, 1 minute is 720-1440 pictures. Feature length 90 minutes is 64800-129600 drawings and thats just the finished frames not counting sketches or roughs. You are going to become a good artist by itself because you have to draw such insane amount to get anything done. Animation courses in art schools usually have only a couple of people actually graduating and rest switching to Graphic Design instead because they're lazy shits.
>>217778300This "classic" style is so saccharine and gay it makes you feel sick. There's a reason no one talks about or watches these animes anymore.
>>217781666>The current TAG union minimum for inbetweeners is $45.42/hr.Infernal trips. But I bet that rate could be much lower in the US if your animation studio would not be situated in big cities and nowhere near California.
>>217781672Someone hand draws the lines for the branches and the top of the front porch, special effects department adds a paint filter on top. Animation was drawn and painted in transparent cells similar to uber-detailed oil paintings. They were the Photoshop Layers of the time.
Agreed, Disney should get back to it's roots.
>>217778300theyre not even willing to pay slaving koreans anymorewhat makes you think they'd pay americans for detailed animation on hand painted cels?
Cartoons went extinct so they can't cast them anymore
>>217781468That's not even a question. The people making that trash will flat out tell you that's what they're doing
>>217781757Now they'd have to hire zoomers on their phones, and if you tell them to stop browsing tiktok and pay attention to the live study material, they'll cancel you and you'll get blacklisted and have to work at McDonald's, and the only fun thing you can do there is watch Ray Croc be baffled by the concept of eating food out of a bag.

>>217781757So Jerry Colonna and Ed Wynn actually acted out their characters' movements?
>>217778300>Why won't they bring back real animation? It expensive, labor intensive, and takes a lot of time and space. Add to that, traditional animation requires institutional knowledge that is constantly training new animators who would learn the process, the tricks, and tips in time to pass them on to the next generation of animators. Plus with the 3d movies they've always been secretly pretty clever about it using each movie is basically R&D for tools they can use on the next movie. Like 'brave' was just an excuse to spend a lot of money to figure out a way to do better more realistic hair. Moana was about water physics, etc. Not to mention that even when disney was making traditionally animated movies they treated their artists like absolute dirt and kept them under really nasty non-compete contracts.

>>217783310that's just dumb and wrong and sounds like you haven't watched much. has everything to do with background vs animated character design choices. here's an example from cel animation where you can literally just see the little crudely drawn cel paintings sitting on a hand painted background that doesn't match well with the coloring of the characters, from a series I'm quite fond of.

>>217783315This would only be true if you watched a random selection of shows, or every show in existence. Most people watch stuff because it’s highly rated or it was recommended to them, so it makes they would trend higher than average.
>>217783310and a random example from digital, with character quality about matching background quality, making the animated character appear much more natural in her setting. >>217783630Unironically I could see generative AI being genuinely useful at bringing down the cost and time sink required for traditional animation. Like you could just animate the key frames and a few interstitial frames and let an AI generate the few frames in between those. It shouldn't have enough room to go all sloppa, and if you trained the model on your own reels, then it should really just do the job of making the same picture but slightly different when it has strict start and end points (the key frames on either side).
