It's not deep. He sees himself die as a child, goes back in time, fingers the wrong group for the release of a deadly virus, and tries to kill the real man who releases it and gets shot in an airport. Whole movie.

I think the biggest explanation of the ending is that the scientist lady at the end isn't coincidental, they sent her there to get the sample after Bruce Willis succeeded in pointing them at the right direction. They can't change the past radically because if they do they never send themselves back in time.
