Things are heightened and flattened the same say a fake-soap in another TV show is usually even more over-dramatic or saccharine than the thing its actually goofing on. You'd figure this out if you put your phone down and actually watched the movie. And yeah, its a david lynch movie, they're weird and sometimes obtuse, but that's the best part. He's from a school of thought in film that believe in dream-as-film. He's not trying to make a movie about a super hero punching a laser, he's making a movie thats like a really weird dream you had when you fell asleep on the couch with some random shit playing on the tv. When you're watching one of his movies, you need to think about it in terms of dream logic. If you want something more straightforward of his, go watch Elephant man, the straight story, or even dune (which is a very flawed movie, but I like it.
