How come when the west does wacky it's cringe but when the japs do it it's kino
>Thing: -_->Thing Japan: 'o'
Every demographic is mocked
>>217787059If anything the Japanese copied wacky western movies. Miike wouldn't exist without Lynch, Cronenberg, and all the crazy 70s and 80s western exploitation movies.
>>217787059Miike has never made a single good film.
>>217787059>How come when the west does wacky it's cringeCan you give some examples?
And it's also a remake of a Korean film
>>217787219Wrong!
>>217787059The Great Yokai War is a 2005 Japanese fantasy film directed by Takashi Miike and a loose remake of the 1968 film Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare.....https://youtu.be/C4geWVx_TuY?si=UwILz8V2t4ED_FAUThat came as a part of an Arrow Bluray boxset of Yokai films including 100 Monsters, Spook Warfare and Along with Ghosts.....https://youtu.be/zQaTrL-neNU?si=p3D53brNbGJQ0g9Dhttps://youtu.be/CJIaoOevZls?si=y1mxlqhVKG3Rd9Hxhttps://youtu.be/7nt6OE30fT8?si=UxZr7UuQ4Yspp1zEDepending on the context, a Yokai can be an apparition, goblin, ghoul, spirit and/or monster from Japanese folkloreArrow always puts out great boxsets like this including the Bloodthirsty Trilogy.....https://youtu.be/WxZ5TrPEKDA?si=MWAlnOjP0RiOTM07While Miike doing, what is essentially a children's fantasy film, is typical of his oeuvre that vollies anywhere between Yakusa gangster films like Dead Or Alive.....https://youtu.be/tXv4V1r_00w?si=qaiCBOD8fwGgYhDBManga adaptations.....https://youtu.be/AmHxzsbAZZc?si=oTSaEzFHhMriOqPAAnd even musicals....https://youtu.be/hK6NaIGZAj0?si=JnBsL-Z9cgtWae_4But also Horror with his 1999 film Audition being his signature piece and what caught people's attention.......https://youtu.be/EBQHp2__AVQ?si=OyMdKa7jvDHbqoCwAnd find it amusing that the 13th and final episode of the TV Horror anthology series Masters Of Horror's first season he Directed, Imprint, was deemed soo shocking and extreme that Showtime pulled it and never aired it on their channel, only showing up later as a DVD release...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqomKbJ_zWcAnywho, if I had one complaint it's that, despite having some really great make-up, costumes and practical effects, Miike unfortunately uses a lot of shitty CGI for many other things.Regardless, I still enjoyed it and would recommend along with every other movie I mentioned above.....https://youtu.be/KG1bUQOAzRM?si=SE9SA0D9CRMmt3zd!!!FACT!!!
>>217787735Based Miike enjoyer effort post. Lots of stuff here for me to check out
>>217787735Forgot pic....!!!FACT!!!
>>217787762Yokai Monsters looks really good. I've been meaning to watch it for a while. I think a film can overcome most shortcomings if it has an exciting gallery of monster designs.
>>217787760>Based Miike enjoyer effort post. Lots of stuff here for me to check outI would also highly recommend Suddenly In The Dark, a 1981 Korean Horror movie...https://youtu.be/dSW6fAo6Tgw?si=QMCUmxQkNIbRbo2h!!!FACT!!!
>>217787059because this movie fully commits to going completely over the top. when the west does "wacky" it's just quips or a self-aware character
>>217787138NPC post. You are not sentient
>>217787059i don't know but i watched this on a whim a few months ago and it was indeed kino
this was more randumb/shitpost-y than i expected.tbqh not sure what i thought of it.
>babby's first japanese directorHe's a Zainichi Korean btw.
>>217787782>Yokai Monsters looks really good. I've been meaning to watch it for a while. I think a film can overcome most shortcomings if it has an exciting gallery of monster designs. That's what's soo great about it that, yes, the FX are very wonky but it still got me emotionally infested with the characters. The cinematography is fucking beautiful while the lead female villain is played by Chiaki Kuriyama from Battle Royale/Kill Bill and looks hot as fuck!!!FACT!!!
>>217787695Shit compared to the book and it's not even one of Ryu Murakami's better novels.
>>217787832You Will Never Be Japanese
>>217787898The director of House made some other good movies most notably this extremely comfy summer romance
Gomenasai /tv/, my name is Ken-Sama.I'm a 27 year old American Otaku (Anime fan for you gaijins). I draw Anime and Manga on my tablet, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing superior Japanese games. (Disgaea, Final Fantasy, Persona series)I train with my Katana every day, this superior weapon can cut clean through steel because it is folded over a thousand times, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my sword license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.I speak Japanese fluently, both Kanji and the Osaka dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Japanese history and their bushido code, which I follow 100%When I get my Japanese visa, I am moving to Tokyo to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an animator for Studio Ghibli or a game designer!I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.Wish me luck in Japan!
>>217787961I think Japan produces some of the best art in the world across multiple mediums but I have no desire to be Japanese.I'm moving to China
>>217787219Gozu, Ley Lines/Rainy Dog, Visitor Q (all other "stranger invades a family" attempts fail in comparison), Ichi the Killer ALL GUD
>>217788015This is legitimately a 5/5, 10/10 powerhouse. Not only are the women beautiful but I have never seen a film capture the true essence of Buddhism ever. It legitimately takes you out of the samsaric experience and then once you have registered it, it throws you back in. I would rewatch it any day of the week and it's much more mature than House. Plus it makes you want to join a motorcycle club
>>217787208All the references in this are Japan-specific
>>217788068Bird People of China. He does launder money for Yakuza so not all productions are good. Visitor Q is influential and very good
>>217788041I'll see you there, anon. I am also bailing on the american century of humiliation.
>>217787948Ryu Murakami is Brett Easton Ellis with his eyes taped back. Ever seen a photo of both of them at once? Now you know why.
>>217787735>>217787762>>217787782Sadly, I think Miike's version is hugely inferior to the original. The original is a very fun and strange movie about Japan's weirdest monsters ganging up to fight off foreign monsters who have come to take their jobs, Miike's version is an Animist horror movie about a nonbinary immortal wizard who wants to lead an insurrection of sentient garbage against the living. The Yokai are pretty much an afterthought.
>>217787942>Got Me Emotionally InfestedThis needs to be the title of a horror movie.
>>217788545Yokai being discarded tools and furniture which come to life to take revenge is a popular trope dating back hundreds of years
>>217787059Because it's not wacky, it's bizarre - which is very much not the same thing
>>217788639Yeah, but the classic 'discarded' yokai like the umbrella are hardly anywhere to be seen - it literally is just piles of angry garbage and a few more conventional monsters.
>>217787059I watched this many years ago because my friend was raving about it, and I got bored. I think there was a scene where they turn into yarn puppets in stop motion? It didn't feel "interesting weird" to me, it felt "lame art student weird". But maybe I was a cynical asshole who couldn't appreciate it. Maybe I was just annoyed because my hipster friend recommend it.
