I never got the feeling that there was ever bad blood between Joel and Mike. I think Joel left the first time because he wanted to do other stuff and now he's handing the license over to someone he knows can do good with it after he took it as far as he could.

It's like The Simpsons, where the show didn't really find its footing until the third season, and the first two were just the crew putting the pieces together and finding their unified voice.
