They're outgunned, outnumbered, and have to make themselves count for twenty of the enemy when that enemy counts for twenty men. That dynamic is what makes Space Marines and Spartans what they are too. When any jarhead can just get super soldier'd it loses all meaning, even when it's the named ODST characters from other games. Waste of good narrative material.

They survived brutal training and they didn't hold Halsey in contempt for what she did to them.In the show, naturally, the UNSC is le evil authoritarian empire so they wiped the kids' memories and naturally as the Spartans find out they are angry and rebel, including John. Cortana gets sidelined for most of it and they abandon a lot of the story threads from the first season.
