>The Halo TV series was canceled by Paramount+ after two seasons, but has found a new audience on Netflix, which is streaming the existing episodes. There is no confirmed plan for a third season, though the producers are reportedly looking for a new network
>The Halo TV series is a live-action adaptation of the popular video game franchise, set in the 26th century during a war between humanity and an alien alliance known as the Covenant. It follows the story of Master Chief John-117, a genetically engineered super-soldier (played by Pablo Schreiber), and his team of Spartans
>As of February 2026, there is no official renewal for a season 3. Despite the cancellation by Paramount+, the show's producers (Amblin Television, Xbox, and 343 Industries) are actively trying to find a new home for the series. The show's unexpected success on Netflix has rekindled discussions about a potential continuation, but as of now, this remains speculative. The large production costs and the challenge of reassembling the cast and crew remain significant hurdles

For the few anons who watched this - What did you dislike (or like) about this short lived series? And what would you have changed to make it better?
If you hated it outright, how would you have gone about making a Halo TV series that surpassed this one?

It’s about some Spartans on reach fighting the covenant and then them doing a last stand

the only people who know how to make halo are the bungie developers who made marathon. halo was originally supposed to be a marathon game. bungie wanted to self publish originally. they only ended up in the microsoft deal because they ran out of money fixing the installer bug in myth 2. the halo books, comics, and live action shit were commissioned by microsoft and were already a deviation from the original vision in many respects (chief not being a cyborg, not being the last spartan, etc). then 343 came in and retconned everything and made an even bigger mess of it. when the executives and producers bring in the "halo expert" booktard to explain halo to them, he's not going to be able to convey the essence of it. he will explain it poorly, and the network will latch unto some specific aspects of it that they find interesting, and create something that is nothing like halo because they don't care. to truly understand halo you have to understand the ideas behind halo. you have to play the marathon trilogy, you have to play CE, you have to have a basic understanding of the western canon, you have to understand robocop, you have to have watched aliens, you have to have read starship troopers, you definitely need to understand the annunaki were extraterrestrials theory, etc
>>
>>217788812
>What went so wrong?
All they had to do was make a shot-for-shot TV series based on Eric Nylund's novels. Instead they put people in charge that didn't understand Halo, nor did they understand the UNSC, the Covenant, Catherine Halsey, the Spartan IIs, or even John himself. The TV series is such a fucking abortion it's on par with the absolute fucking trash coming out of Disney Star Wars like the Acolyte.

even conan the barbarian has more essence and aura of halo than new halo games. the forerunners = atlanteans, chief = conan, enigma of steel = forerunner legacy of technology, thulsa doom = prophet of truth. all humans are reclaimers, but chief is the most reclaimer because he is a 7 foot tall cyborg gigachad and the forerunners were biblical giants (every forerunner interior has a 10 foot tall ceiling at least). conan is an atlantean because he is a giant gigachad and his ancestors were also biblical giants. conan reclaims the legacy of the atlanteans, chief reclaims the legacy of forerunner technology for mankind.

>What went so wrong?
Someone's original sci-fi story wouldn't get greenlit until it swapped out all of the names in it with things from a popular franchise, and Halo was chosen as the IP.
So a bunch of people who openly state they hate Halo and video games stretched Halo over their script like a rotting skin suit. They even went the extra mile and got people who openly hate things like Judge Dredd and The Mandalorian for, specifically, how they were able to have very popular lead characters who never showed their face.

I don't think it can be stressed enough by anyone how little this shit heap had to do with Halo beyond the costumes and the names of the characters.
>>
>let's demystify Master Chief and make him lame

Could've just done an ODST show with an original plot and had Master Chief show up in the finale. Did they learn nothing from Mandalorian S2 when Luke shows up? That's literally all it takes

Remember when they added female Marines to the games and literally no one cared?
>>
Pacing.
Shouldn't have taken most of two seasons to only just get past the Fall of Reach, and to not get to Halo itself is obviously kind of a problem for a story called "Halo"
>>
>>217789817
>Remember when they added female Marines to the games and literally no one cared?
Lore-wise it didn't matter since the average human is woefully unequipped to physically confront most of the Covenant's fighters anyway. It's like a dwarf trying to wrestle a body builder.
>>
>>217789817
For the same reason no one gives a shit about female guardsmen in 40k. It's a losing war against genocidal aliens in the far future.

>>217788812
They could of made the show about a bunch of Marines trying to hold off a Covenant invasion and they get rescued by Spartans in the last episode.
>>
>>217789893
Yeah a gajillion Marines died in Halo 1, the war with the Covenant felt like a losing war in the 4 Bungie games. Humanity always felt on the brink of extinction, and then there were the Flood that made things even worse. Having chicks fighting made it seem like things were really THAT bad. Now it's just contrived having like girl Spartans and shit.

>Now it's just contrived having like girl Spartans and shit.
The gentrification of spartanhood in general was a shit decision in general, female or not. The indoctrination, training, and augmentation of the children made them something more, and less, than a human being. Ironically Dead or Alive, a series infamous for big titty ninjas, portrayed Nicole as physically identical to Chief if not for her feminine body language. They were tools, weapons, walking war crimes. Spartan 4s are just mass produced comic book heroes.

Sister of Battle in 40k aren't even up to Space Marine standards, they're just schizo church girls with guns. The girl warrior stereotype used to be coomer bait, now it's gotten ridiculous.
>>
What is the point of adapting a show if you're not going to adapt it? I mean you already know the answer, but the show is insulting just on the face of it.
>>
They paid so much money to advertise the show at the Superbowl a couple years ago just to be mocked years later kek
>>
>>217790069
once again, the essence of it comes from marathon. chief was originally supposed to be a battleroid. this was changed at the last second, because the marines in CE still say "look a MK V" when they see him. the security officer in marathon was a MK IV. like spartans, battleroids are also 7 foot tall cyborgs with titanium bones, enhanced muscles, and cybernetic brains - but in marathon they are regulated as WMDs because of how dangerous they are, and they are created from dead soldiers resurrected with cybernetics (like robocop)
>>
>>217790152
>Sister of Battle in 40k aren't even up to Space Marine standards, they're just schizo church girls with guns
SoB wouldn't have it any other way, and neither would I. There's a story of a Sister that parried a daemon weapon with her blade to save her comrade, only for it to shatter on her next attempt to defend herself in the same way. Whether that's her faith or the direct intervention of the Emperor doesn't matter, it's the fact that a normal woman in power armor stood up against a horror from unreality and accomplished the impossible.

By that same token, the struggle of the average marine in Halo is the same. They're outgunned, outnumbered, and have to make themselves count for twenty of the enemy when that enemy counts for twenty men. That dynamic is what makes Space Marines and Spartans what they are too. When any jarhead can just get super soldier'd it loses all meaning, even when it's the named ODST characters from other games. Waste of good narrative material.
>>
>>217790230
Nylund managed to preserve parts this by veering into a biopunk augmentation process, plus passing off the "Mark V" as a reference to MJOLNIR even though it kinda doesn't track with the dialogue lines. 343 completely lost the plot, while the assholes that made the tv series never understood the plot in the first place.
>>
>>217790269
what frustrates me is that it's a completely different canon, and that they had an opportunity to fix things and still blew it. that was the last opportunity. i don't regard the new CE remake as a new opportunity because i know it will retcon humans being forerunners out of spite
>>
>>217790194
It was in development hell for many years. They must have preferred to make something awful than give up.
>>
>>217790285
>i know it will retcon humans being forerunners out of spite
It'll probably do a lot of things out of spite, and probably emasculate Chief in some manner to boot. Many of the people that work on these intellectual properties walked into their job with a long list of biases and preconception that are poison to creativity and good storytelling.

In the early books the Spartans never really questioned their lot, nor did ONI obfuscate their intentions. Literally the day they were abducted they were marched into a room and shown a hologram recreation of Thermopylae, then told they were going to be the 300. They survived brutal training and they didn't hold Halsey in contempt for what she did to them.

In the show, naturally, the UNSC is le evil authoritarian empire so they wiped the kids' memories and naturally as the Spartans find out they are angry and rebel, including John. None of those kids, least of all John, would have raised a hand against Halsey. Ever.
>>
>>217790194
They did. Adapting doesn't mean copying something 1:1, it means taking something and transforming it into something that works in another medium.
If you think not enough people liked the Halo that made, even less would have liked one with a zero personality, faceless Master Chief who just kills things and has his blue hologram exposition dump everything about the story around him
>>
>>217790355
>zero personality, faceless Master Chief who just kills things
That's the thing: For the great majority of Chief's military career he served with others. Neither he nor they were bereft of personality. By the time the events of the original game roll around a lot of them are dead. James, Kelly, Samuel, Linda, etc. all had banter and personalities of their own. There was a mountain of material to work with and they fucked it all up.

which is a crazy angle on their part. the whole appeal of humans vs aliens storylines is that we are united against the outside threat and get to point out guns outwards - but i guess there are some like, some esoteric racial nationalist type undertones in halo like the forerunners being wakandan atlantean hyperborean ARYANS from agartha, and humans being the chosen people of the galaxy, and all this type of business, and because 343 and hollywood hate the HECKIN NAZIS more than they love life itself, they decided to retcon humans being forerunners AND discredit humanity as corrupt and unworthy at the same time. like, halo has right wing nationalist undertones to it, but it's about HUMANITY. it can only be about humanity because it is a humans vs aliens scenario. halo is a celebration of humanity. humans like guns, and pickup trucks, and war drums. you ever see that alex jones clip where he's clenching his fists and hitting the table screaming 'I'M A HUMAN, THIS IS WHAT WE LOOK LIKE, THIS IS WHAT WE ACT LIKE"? it's like that. it's simple and honest. they hate that shit. halo has all the same tropes that something like far cry blood dragon has (master chief is basically rex power colt), but it's never played ironically it's so earnest and real - or was

>which is a crazy angle on their part. the whole appeal of humans vs aliens storylines is that we are united against the outside threat and get to point out guns outwards
You'd think that wouldn't you? But that's not what it's about anymore. There has to be some preachy anti-authoritarianism message embedded into everything and anyone that interprets a high authority society as positive is undesirable. It happened to Starship Troopers, and now it happened to Halo. The difference is the Starship Troopers film that pissed all over its original author's intent was actually fun to watch. Probably by accident.
>like, halo has right wing nationalist undertones to it, but it's about HUMANITY
They legit think humanity should go extinct rather than turn to authority and military power for strength against an outside threat. I have been told as much by people that wank over Heinlein-derivative works but call Heinlein himself a fascist.

>>217790354
Anon what the hell? ONI is fucking evil though, kidnapping children, giving their family a retarded clone that was going to die, subjecting them to war training and then using them to fight other human rebels.
>>
>>217790721
>ONI is fucking evil though
Correct, but they weren't a cartoon villain nor were the spartan children interested in getting vengeance. Halsey is the best expression of that: She is their hand. She intentionally did something morally wrong for a practical purpose that, in retrospect, appears justified because it quite literally saved humanity. It's more complicated than "they did a bad thing so they're objectively evil!"
>>
>>217788812
I liked the first season but the second season was very unfocused giving us invasion of Reach, the Flood and the unexplained Makee surviving. Cortana gets sidelined for most of it and they abandon a lot of the story threads from the first season. It does end just like the game though with the Chief and Cortana on Halo so if they continued it I'd watch it.
>>
>>217790812
Well I can agree with that. I do think they need to be addressed, but the series went wrong in that and many aspect, although I have to say I didn't watch the second season, is funny, my family enjoyed S1, then we watched the first episode of S2 and they didn't think about continuing (while still watching trash like Law and Order SVU).
>>
>>217788812
>or like
Admittedly the flood was handled pretty well
>>
>>217790852
>I do think they need to be addressed, but the series went wrong in that and many aspect,
It would be extremely difficult for them to even try. If Halsey is the hand then the Spartans are the boot. They were made to crush rebellions and they did so without mercy. The Fall of Reach details a raid they undertake on a rebel asteroid outpost before any of them got their special power armor, a snatch & grab with many rebel casualties.

John himself is the oppressor. He'd kill a separatist under orders from ONI in a heartbeat. Portraying such a character as the hero is anathema to the production staff's predisposition.
>>
>>217790009
Girl spartans were in it from the beginning in the Fall of Reach. The problem is when they don't look like soldiers, see Kat vs Sarah Palmer.
>>
>>217790721
ONI are basically the CIA using the Spartans as their super secret black ops to deal with uprisings. When the Covenant showed up they pivoted to making them the face of humanities stand against overwhelming odds. Because no actually gives a fuck about how Spartans came into being when they're saving billions of lives.
>>
>>217789817
Aren't humans like on the brink of extinction throughout the covenant war? Using every able bodies person you can is different from some girlboss added to a game about the world wars or something.
