Losing this experience is more about the concerted effort by multiple industries and cabals to make in person social interactions unnecessary. This has nothing to do with CRT TVs, VHS, physical media as a whole, or anything else this image is trying to imply.

Yeah, same. I think only kids who were babies in the early 2000s think there's something wholesome or useful about shitty CRT TV's and a tiny limited amount of movies that you have to watch with your annoying family until the tapes wear out. At the same time, I just pirate what I want now. I have access to more softcore sex comedies now than any Blockbuster in history.

This. The peak was actually going to parties with friends and someone popping on a Mario Kart Wii disk or Halo or COD: Black Ops I, or a 21 Jump Street/Tropic Thunder movie watch along at a boy's sleepover. DVDs were the shit, because they had all the special features, were good quality, and still provided social experiences.

VHS was okay, but to me, I'll associate more with watching it alone as a kid when you're sick. Crop and scans also sucked for VHS. It was cool going to thrift stores and getting VHS tapes though.

I saw a thread about how all the street lights are blue or white these days, but that's certainly not the case where I live. I'd say about 50% are still yellow, and yes, they're all LEDs. They also seem to be deliberately mixed.
>>
>>217788986
The overall effect is not a deliberate effort, but the result of social media, technology and having access to an endless amount of entertainment from your own home. It would have happened one way or another, unless a powerful, authoritarian regime deliberately tried to stop it, and even then, it would be self-defeating due to the economic impact it would have.
Sure, there are individuals and corporations with their own agenda, but that mostly revolves around making people use and pay for their products or services.

The same shit happened when the TV became commonplace, given that it gave people a reason to stay home and remain passive in front of the TV all evening (or even during the daytime for women), rather than socializing, participating in the local community or pursuing hobbies during their free time. There's a reason it was such a common target for satire and criticism back in the 80s and 90s.

if you're torrenting and storing, the ratio of owned to borrowed media is probably the same as in the 90s, most people did not buy the VHS of everything they watched, you'd only have the most popular (if you had kids), the randomly taped and then most of it would be borrowed from a friend or a rental service.

No one had a combo in their living room. The TV sat on top of the cabinet, with the VCR on the shelf directly underneath and two shelves, either side of the VCR, with blank tapes, in faux book covers.
>>
>>217795740
It actually wasn't. Many smarter, privately-owned video stores had stickers on their tapes that said "Be Kind, DON'T Rewind". The reasoning behind this is that after a tape has been in your VCR for an 100+ minutes, it's been heated up and is more prone to damage from the high-speed rewind function. Immediately rewinding a tape after it had been played could cause tons of wear in an instant.

Big companies like blockbuster didn't give a fuck about this, but a small, mom and pop rental shop would rather invest in a handful of dedicated rewind machines and keep their tapes in good condition, especially since many of them might stay in rotation for 10+ years.

at work everyone has a phone on them at all times and we use them as much as our laptops to communicate about the tasks we are doing and whatever is happening in general, my friends are mostly in the same field and it's not the kind of job that stops when you go home. It's sad but I'm conditioned to see it as a normal part of existing, like wearing shoes and driving a car. Probably why it annoys me more that people use their phone during movies or dinner or in bed because those are supposed to be pockets of time set aside to be separate from the busyness of everyday life.
>>
>>217796133
towards the early 00s everyone had at least one of those cheap tv sets with a VCR integrated into the bottom. My grandpa made some good money selling clandestine pornos to the imitation Blockbusters in the 80s. He’d hire a hooker and pay some random dude to have sex with her, film it, then sell the video for more than what he paid them. He was a visionary, because one day he filmed a blonde lot lizard and a black trucker, and the video rental place owner (who for $5 would let you watch it for 30 mins in another room) told him to get more black dudes and white chicks because that video was being rented so much that he couldn’t keep up (he would make copies).

By the 90s it was mostly interracial stuff back there. He would take a Polaroid of the hooker and the John and glue it to the tape. I watched one once and towards the end, instead of ejaculation being the “end” I clearly heard my grandpa say “do it!! Do it right now!!” And the black dude took a huge shit on the white woman’s chest. It was really bad quality, but for some reason, the black dude looked sadder the white chick that got shit ON.

I always wonder if my grandpa started the whole no-story-just-sex interracial porn thing. Funny, because he was a family portrait photographer at sears. Made good money too.

There's a lot of things I agree with as far as the "old good new bad" sentiment goes but VHS was not one of them. The bigger problem with the switch to the future in that image is them being distracted brainlessly scrolling on their phones.

The medium does matter, because even though it was shittier in many ways, you appreciated your limited VHS/DVD collection more.
