Tony is a fed by the end anyway. The mob is finished. Melfi was the stand in for the viewers. Since he stopped attending therapy at Melfi's office, we no longer know what goes on in his life.
He died, the scene focuses way too much on the hitman in the members only jacket. It's pretty obvious rewatching the scene
Chase wanted it to be ambiguous whether or not the Member's Only guy decided to take out a couple of the other Sopranos for kicks when he shot Tony, too

I think people forget there is an entire season behind this scene. The story of Tony getting shot and its consequences have already been explored throughout the season as well as the Mafia war. From a story perspective , Tony is virtually dead anyway. Take your favourite pick which thing kills him, the members only guy, Paulie and Patsy, Eugene's wife, the hassidic homeboy, the onion rings. Either he dies or goes to prison because of Carlo.

I feel like rereading books is largely a waste of timethats why I when I feel the urge to revisit some of my favorites I will find a translation of it in a new language.Also I dont read fiction, but I think translated fiction would be too much of a watered down experience
