Because after failing to get S14 of his shitty nu-MST3K crowdfunded, and the fifteen-years-too-late Gizmoplex site failed to launch, Joel sold off the last of his rights to Shout! Factory, and they are now the sole owners of the MST3K brand. This just so happened to line up with the 20th anniversary of Mike’s Rifftrax enterprise, so in a move to promote buzz for both, and to win some fan good will back after the aforementioned shitty recent seasons, they’re getting Mike, Kevin, Bill, and Mary Jo to reprise their roles from the Sci-Fi Channel era of the show.

I mean, I don't know many people that didn't have some fucked up tragedy happen to them or OF models that get $1.5 million in 2 days from people as donations. We have a family friend who was part of the production for Soultaker.
They said that Joe Estevez and Robert Zdar were consummate professionals and great to work with.
The biggest problem with the production was the greasy romantic lead. He would show up to the set drunk every day
"Just let me have one beer before the take" was uttered by him multiple times on set

Joel and the bots reunite (with Joel even mentioning that Crow sounds kinda funny) and he tells them about his life after escaping from the Satellite. In the final segment Joel has fixed the Satellite and tells Mike and the bots that he can't take them back to earth. He feels that his years on the Satellite "made a man out of him" and that if Mike and bots stick it out, it might work for them too. Rejuvenated with that desire, Mike and the bots swear to carry on.

There are movies that virtually nobody on earth knew existed until they sprung into the public consciousness decades after their debut, like Samurai Cop

And frankly my favorite Rifftrax (specifically Rifftrax, not MST) moment is when they got in touch with James Nguyen, director of Birdemic, and he casually mentioned that he had two prior films completed before Birdemic that were never released, and they understandably reacted like someone moving an old armoire in Venice and seeing a previously unknown Da Vinci manuscript behind it
>>
>>217799407
mike says they get a lot of recommendations from people and fans all the time, it's just that a lot of them aren't that funny, and for a mst3k reboot they probably want solid gold
>>

>>
>>217798803
I respect how the Joel era kept a goofy midwestern charm the whole time, but a large amount of the movies he picked were 50s movies meant to play at drive-ins (thus were meant to be background noise while 50s teens made out) and were very boring. when nothing happens on screen, there's nothing to riff on and the episode is boring.
Mike had a sharper darker edge to his humor which meant it lost a bit of the folksy charm, but his choice of movies was way better
movies like that Wisconsin spider movie and Space Mutiny are way better than the average thing Joel picked

Mike era had a lot of stuff from the Sci Fi channel. I think the Hobgoblins guy actually went out of his way so they'd make fun of his movies since he was a huge fan
>>
Simple reason is what they said in a youtube video. "It was fun, we wanna have fun again."
>>
>>217790537
Joel's idea of making MST3k into SNL type show where they bring in new talent every few years was a decent one but wasn't really handled well and just isn't a huge market for 90 minute tv shows where puppets watch old flicks .
All the kickstarter money is just from millennial and Xoomers that grew up with the show.

This is why I was baffled by the decision to feature the "same" robots. Could have sidestepped the whole "Gypsy" thing without cucking (although he could also just have ignored the tiny minority who decided the name was "problematic"), and no one could have complained about those characters being ruined. Granted, there'd still have been all the other issues with nuMST3K, but still.
>>
>>217802594
I was watching a NuMST3K episode the other day and Jonah still referred to Gypsy as Gypsy when he spoke to her.

Today I will once again remind them that Joel wanted his role to be replaced by a woman because he didn't want "another white male" to helm the show, and pictured his character being turned female by space radiation and possibly played by Bridget Jones (Nuveena Woman of the Future, Flavia, Mr. B Natural). Instead, he was replaced by Mike Nelson, and Mike married Bridget and together they made a lot of babies and grandbabies. Bridget Nelson remains the cutest thing on earth to this day. Mike drags her onto his podcast occasionally and they try to make each other laugh over the stupidest things, like bad New Yorker cartoons.
>>
>>217804385
Oh, yeah, some of the sets was that, but also, there were wood carvings they added like the things in Every Country has a Monster bit.

Also, is this going to be part of Joel's reboot series? Are Pearl, Observer and Prof. Bobo being hired by Kingdra to torture Mike again like they got Dr. Weinstein back to torture Joel for an episode?
>>

>>217804491
i don't think they're going to try to address numst3k at all for several reasons. felicia and patton are probably too expensive to bother with and there was so much bullshit retarded plot in the new seasons they'd have to waste too much time explaining. but mostly it's right there in the name. it's "rifftrax" makes mst3k so it's going to be all rifftrax people i'd bet doing bit parts or whatever else.
>>
>>217804754
that shit is random, official mst3k channel is like 1/4 old mst3k, 1/4 rifftrax/film crew, 1/4 cinematic titanic, and 1/4 numst3k and has been like that for a few years.

>I wonder which movies they'll do.

>>217804491

I can see Kinga getting a brief mention. Maybe Pearl thinks her granddaughter is horrible at the old family experiment so she starts doing it again out of "If you want something done right..."
Also, if we could also get Pearl/Clayton/Kinga all on screen together somehow, that'd be fun.
>>
>>217804951
I don't think Neil Breen would ever let that happen. At least with the amount of money some kickstarter MST3K season has to offer

Mike's life pattern was unusual. He went to college at like 16, and one of the people he worked with at Friday's was a concert pianist. You get all kinds of weird snippets from his podcast. His uncle died and left him his house full of buckets of shit in the basement. He was invited to give a keynote address at Mensa, but was not offered an honorary membership. I really like Pod People, but in more of a comfy way than a funny way. There's just something about the foggy woods, the synth soundtrack, the thunder, and the cozy layout of the house that 80 percent of the movie takes place in that just makes me want to take a nap. The characters just kind of hang out, and someone occasionally gets karate chopped by a midget alien, and even the "horrifying" scenes are really laid back.

>we're cheap/lazy so we made the new one tiny
>and it's too light to rotate well.
>instead of opening it up and putting a weight in it, or mounting it on a thin metal pole and editing the pole out frame-by-frame, we just slowed it down and said 'eh good enough'
This is not promising
>>
I hope they do at least one goofy ass 80s sword n sorcery flick
I really hope they're all kinda old movies in general since that's really the comfiest but I imagine they're probably going to dip into "A Talking Cat!?" territory
>>
>>217811687
You wouldn’t have even known the difference if they hadn’t made that video.
>>
>>217811747
I want Night Beast, the “cheesy looking alien runs around the woods murdering goofy and poorly-acted rednecks” movie that Don Dohler did between Alien Factor in ‘77 and Galaxy Invader in ‘85. Those movies are the types that are funny enough on their own, but are fertile ground for riffing.
>>
>>217803848
the girl's drunk dad in this movie is a great acting scene
>>
>>217811794
These things add up. That half-ass attitude is how you end up the greenscreen sets of nuMST3K (which are so poorly done that everything has a green halo around it). Not to mention the awful intro.

Mike was the best performer on the show that’s why he was picked

They’ve already said that everything is going to be in-camera, and that they’ve even got ideas to fix the logo swing. I say again, you wouldn’t have noticed if they hadn’t self-reported, and you’re going out of your way to find something to get butthurt about. They haven’t even started real production yet, so you’re just making assumptions based on a video where they said “We tried something different, which caused a minor issue that we shot and edited around because we didn’t have time to redo it, but we’ll fix it for the real show”
>>
>>217812136
I don't think saying something is 'not promising' is the same as getting butthurt or making assumptions.
>>
>>217812153

Mike's stories about his dad are really fascinating stuff. He has had a very strange life. His retellings of times he awkwardly met celebrities and didn't get along with them are always fun too
>>
Every time I rewatch the skit with Mike being discourteous to the nanite hairstylist I want to stop him so bad...

Being a conservative Christian in entertainment is a death sentence. He tends to keep his views on the DL, just like Weird Al & Tiny Tim.
>>
>>217791671
Those, Time Chasers, The Girl in Gold Boots, and Merlin's Shop are probably my favorites.

I saw the first season of the reboot and it was surprisingly not bad. Not the same, but respectable and I liked it.

>>

Trace and Frank were already mads so they couldn’t be the new host (though I could see Dr F sending Frank into space as punishment)
>>
>>217813516
Hopefully they tone her down in mst3k, her rifftrax presents with bridget all suck because all mary jo talks about is woke stuff, no jokes just repeating that a character is either white or a male in the past. maybe it's the character they've decided to give her for rifftrax but it fucking sucks, makes pearl seem warm and comforting.
>>
>>217811687
I noticed it wobble in the initial pitch video and just assumed it was a placeholder asset they filmed prior to getting any backer money
I can't believe they were actually going to use that especially with how bad the lighting was on it, it was just the warehouse overhead lighting and the midwest version of ILM's the Volume
>>
>>217805554
They're not exactly Hollywood and never have been or will be. They're a bunch of funny and creative midwestern white people doing their own thing. RLM is another example, though not nearly as good.
>>217807637
I have Mike's Mind Over Matters book. I've read it many times, I recommend it if you haven't read it. His podcasts are good too. The one where him and his friend read bad books especially. I had no idea how bad Ready Player One is.
>>
>>217813458
it's produced horribly though. no joke editing at all. the first netflix episodes are all constant jokes every second no matter if they're good or bad and the movie barely gets to exist.
>>
>>217813645
It came off a try-hard and desperate at times, especially early one. S1 improved over time but I never got around to the others.

>>217790537
I never thought these guys were all that funny. There were a few moments I enjoyed but for the most part the show was largely forgettable.

i think she's fine in mst3k. have you listened to her rifftrax presents because i've listened to a lot of them because i let their always on channel play. bridget plays a character that's kinda ditsy and oblivious and mary jo plays a character that's offended by everything and talks about how bad/sad her life is. sure there are normal riffs in between but for some reason they're playing these characters in almost every riff.
>>
>>217813828
Well, maybe. Icve seen just one: the short about women in America. Also, they made a lot of fun of her on The Mads for not getting mentioned in the credits.

Was that where the Fentoozla came from? (Where you get the keep the glass)
I assume a fentoozla was an expensive drink at a cheesy restaurant but you got to keep the glass it was served it (which was probably not just a regular glass)
Like at a tiki bar that lets you buy the wacky porcelain cups they serve their tropical drinks in
>>
>>217790537
What was the point of the skinny mom character in this ?
What was her job? Why were random men always taking her on tropical vacations ?
Why include the mom character at all ? Was the main character supposed to be a high school student ?
Why did the fuzzy cop mention that the mom had plenty of money ?
Was the movie implying that she was a high end escort ?

His momma was a whore, and it messed him up inside.
That was the subtext and the background for our laserblasting hero.
>>
>>217815049
A prolonged "your mom's a hoe" joke?
We may never know...
>>
>>217815049
Just another example of why the kid's life sucked, another avenue for the cops to fuck with him about, and would maybe explain why he could be pushed into going on a laser rampage.
>>
>>217815120
I mean I can kind of buy into that being the subtext but it’s weird to include it at all. He didn’t seem all that dark or disturbed before he got the laser blaster
Kind of like Track of the Moon Beast character mentioning that he lives with his mom despite being a fairly successful 40 year old archeological professor (I think). The mother doesn’t even show up in the movie
