They are powerful enough to rival big planet governments in military strength. Their downfall in ep1 is having to use their capital assets to blockade the planet naboo, which likely costs them insane cash in lost trade

>>217797992If I recall correctly from my (admittedly dated) knowledge of Clone War era lore, the Trade Federation kind of lucked out big time when it came to getting their massive war machine rolling. Their big lucrehulk class ships they got through a lien on a client who was super behind on their bills. They then realized that the giant storage bays of the ships would make great troop holds and shuttle bays, it's just a shame that they aren't oxygenated in there. Oh and what a coincidence that Geonosis and their droid assembly lines owe us well, not to mention Dooku probably ensuring they got a great deal on the purchase order. But surely obviously fraudulent or "too-good-to-be-true" purchases will be audited by the finance authorities? Good thing our friends on Muun run the Banking Clan and can make sure they get pushed through without any red tape.

I decided to take one for the team and check wookieepedia and there's no monarch he's representing; the leader of the trade federation is simply titled viceroy for no reason givento be fair it would be very easy to make up an explanation in a future story, he could be a high ranking official of some other monarchy like naboo
