It's not like any of Lovecraft's characters on their own are particularly interesting either though, at least not in a way you couldn't easily replicate without any of the baggage by making your own weird esoteric monster.

I always think of this movie alongside Dagon, and vice versaThey aren't really that similar except for that single crucial element; the evil loveThat the girl is a monster, a demon, a murderer, but that her love is also pure and true and unconditional and in some bizarre way this absolves her, the bad ending turns into a happy ending because at least she got what she wanted.
