Season 4 has some decent standalone episodes, but the formula stopped working. Half the cast leaves to go do Angel, and then Xander and Giles don't go to college, so there's always to contrived scenario to right them into the episode.

That was genuinely pretty cool when it was done, to be fair. I shall list the series from the absolute shits to the absolute best, if anyone cares: B7B6B1A4B4B5B2A2A3B3A1A5It was a decent show, occasionally great, mostly just good. Had I not watched it as a kid, I don't think I could pick it up now. A lot of my enjoyment was nostalgia, waiting a week for the next episode, talking about it in school etc. As people have said, Angel is far better, and holds up better.

Rewatching the show now in my 30s I never realised as a kid how much of a dickhead Xander is. He's always giving Buffy shit over Angel and later Spike but he has no issue being in a relationship and proposing to a woman who spent 1000 years as a demon who tortured men. She caused more suffering in her time than Angel and Spike did combined.
