Could Saruon have defeated the Balrog of the Misty Mountains? There is a reason the Balrog is in it's shadow and flame underworld kingdom and not fighting for Sauron, it views itself has an equal or better than Sauron.

Yes it could have killed him if he didn’t have the ring of power.

It would’ve been similar to Gandalf vs Balrog. Both Gandalf, the Balrog and Sauron are the same species and are on the same ‘power level’ though Sauron with his ring would be more powerful.

If memory serves correct from The Silmarillion, Sauron was Morgoth's greatest lieutenant and the Balrog's (more than one, the one under mountain is Durin's Bane) are below that level lieutenants. Yet, Balrog's appear to be more akin to Morgoth's true form, Sauron takes on an appearance that is a mix of human, elven and Morgoth.

I think Sauron knew about the Balrog under the Misty Moutain (and Smaug), but couldn't do anything about them because they would not be 2nd in command under. When Morgoth was casted into the void, the power structure collapses and the Balrogs and Sauron did their own thing.

In the Movie trilogy? No, because Sauron is literally just a flaming eyeball that can't move. Maybe if the Balrog built enough scaffolding around the tower the Eye sits on it could fling itself into the eyeball but I doubt it would do that.
In the books? Yes, Sauron is more powerful than Gandalf, and Gandalf defeated the Balrog.

The real question is could any of them defeat the Nameless Things that live in the deepest caves of Moria? The Balrog itself was scared of them which is why it immediately ran the fuck away from the lake that both him and Gandalf fell into. We know it's not scared of Gandalf, and there's no reason they can't fight on the shores of the lake if he wants to kill Gandalf like he planned to do on the bridge.

why, didnt sauron put his power into the ring, how does that make a net positive?

It just enhances his power. A good analogy I’ve heard before is that a bodybuilder can bench 250lbs, deadlift 600lbs and squat 300lbs. His power combined is 1150lbs but he cannot use it all at once. The ring is the tool that allows Sauron to use all his power at once and lift those 1150lbs in whatever way he pleases.

Think of the Ring of power like an extra large piss jar. He pisses into it and stops when he no longer has to pea. The jar is barely filled it all. But give it some time and he can piss in it even more. It takes days or weeks or months to fill the piss jar. He was pissing all he had into the jar. you would think there is no way all that liquid came out of one dude, but it wasn’t all at once. It was a lengthy process storing power and then replenishing power etc

yes, you see in the movie sauron fought like 5000 elves and humans on his own and his scream attack sent them all flying back.

also sauron at that power level would have obliterated graldnlaf
he would have screamed at the balrog and blown out its flames

Ring binds his power to middle earth/arda. He's probably leeching off erus or morgoths power woven into reality or something.

So Sauron’s greatest feat is that he can bench press 1150lbs? That’s impressive but hardly a world ending threat

You have to remember that everything was lighter back then
