>>217807434I think of this episode as a kind of modern response to Vonnegut’s Harrison Bergeron. Where Vonnegut imagines a young man choosing to lose his life in an act of counterterrorism against a dystopian society, this episode proposes that any sufficiently popular stand against exploitation inevitably becomes commodified and branded as a consumable product. Consumerism is the perfect system because it doesn’t squash dissent like a totalitarian government would, it folds it into its machinery and makes it an asset. The person expressing their outrage with the system becomes a performer and their audience doesn’t become a member of an underground resistance group, but rather they know their head in agreement “You’re right. The system isn’t fair” have their desire for change sedated, and everything continues as usual.
