I think this movie is overhyped. And it's carried by the Shakespeare reference. If you called it another way it would be mediocre. As it is.
I watched this yesterday at the kino and I couldn't wait for it to end.
Many plot tropes unexplored, underused characters, no climax moment. Didn't reach me emotionally like at all.

Same. Incredibly flat characters. Awful and on the nose dialogues. The characters just state their thoughts. They have no inner world. No neurosis. Everything is worn on the sleeves. Paul Mescal was terribly miscast. He's in a complete different register than the other actors. It gave me the feeling it was written by someone who didn't particularly care about Shakespeare's plays, but found the Hamnet/Hamlet trivia interesting and tried to write their idea of a classic, latching into tropes and missing the mark. Very, very underwhelming movie. Also mostly completely ahistorical. Very little is known about Shakespeare and even less about Anne Hathaway, but the movie somehow still managed to come off as a silly fabrication.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but Chloe Zao is a major Chinese government asset and there's a an absolute fortune being spent to push her career.

They should unironically fund Eternals 2 then
>>
>>217811458
I don't think that's true. Asian kids from super rich families just have the right mix of personal finances and a politically approved racial background to make it in the US.

They want to hype up that bitch as one of the greatest directors of the 2020s.

Shakespeare in Love is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Have not seen it yet but I like the idea of it
>gather all white cast
>portraying England in the Elizabethan period as actually nice despite shit like disease which took their son
>roundabout pro-natalism because the movie is dedicated to two parents being completely heartbroken by the death of their son
Seems about as pro-English as you can get nowadays

there are some blacks at the theatre scene tho

Lmao look up Mescal's age, motherfucker looks 40.

It is and it is extraordinarily refreshing
>>
this film features millennial-woman written dialogues at its peak ("Listen to me, I want to know you're safe")
which is especially jarring when you hear a Shakespearean soliloquy after that

I don't get the hate, I literally do not watch modern films as I just hate the ethics and morals of the modern world and so this was only the second film i've seen released in the last 5 years but I thought it was actually really moving.

I only decided to watch it because in trailer I noticed they depict children as a part of the story in a sentimental way which you don't see much today. In most films children are depicted as a nuisance, or a characterless plot device but in this film they are actually just real children, who like to play and the bit with young boy trading places with his sister was very moving.

Also to see a film about Early Modern England with an all white cast and the timeperiod being shown genuine respect for once was very nice.

Written by an Irish woman with 2 Irish leads, very weird.
>>
>>217810172
It was good. Not great, but good. Liked the catharsis angle, water symbolism, the leads, and how it presented family dynamics. Not sure what the witch things was about. Perhaps a wild feminine in contrast to William's scholarly masculine. Or the author's preference for paganism over Christianity. There were some anti-patriarchal and anti-Christian undertones in there for sure, although not to the degree where it would become overly bothersome.

She's such a major chinese government asset that when she won oscars for Nomadland the news about it was censored in chinese media. Stop being retarded chud. You're talking out of your ass. You have no sauce for this. It happened in your head

Her career is absolutely astroturfed and Chinese money is likely the culprit

Ang Lee did well with Sense and Sensibility.

Ang Lee is a prime example because he’s technically very good but it’s just coated with that heavy maudlin asiany quiet undercurrent that ends up feeling like numbness over time to me
