The real problem is that middle management is horrifically bloated in most companies and should be culled because 90% of their job is just forwarding emails from higher ups to lower downs and attending "calls" where there are 50 people attending yet only 2 or 3 actually talking or coming up with ideas, but there won't be any significant purge of these pencil pushers because they actually have a say in downsizing plans.

Yes any idiot can read a book and learn to code. Employers care very little about what you learned at school and a great deal that you finished school, and are capable of functioning in a structured environment where you’re given tasks and your performance is measured, and that you stuck with it for a number of years and didn’t just piss your pants and ragequit.
If “self-taught” was an actual skill that you valued, you would have self-taught yourself to develop a product or start your own business. But all you wanted to do was take the lazy & cheap route to a credential.
