As a character, he was pretty inconsistent. Why was he so psychotic in season 1? Why did he shoot his car? What did he tell his wife?

I think he was a Jesse Pinkman situation where they originally planned to get rid of his character after season 1 but the showrunners liked him so much they kept him around. I'm not going to do any research to confirm that though.
You would never in a million years see a white character get a redemption arc after being a violent racist in a modern TV show
