The writer for Babylon 5 wrote a "bible" of plans and pitched it to Paramount in 1988. There were allegations of copyright and lawsuits because Paramount still had access to that work when B5 and DS9 began filming.

In case there's teh remote chance of someone reading this who doesn't know, Babylon 5 was in development since 1985, and after JMS finished working on the show "Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future", he started shopping around the series bible to various networks, including Paramount, who passed on the show.
Paramount then of course commissioned DS9 and ripped off pretty much every aspect of Babylon 5's concept and series arc(s).

Is the pilot movie a recommended watch or should I just dive into Season 1
>>
>>217977018
Meh. Even though I like Babylon 5 more than DS9, only the most basic of concepts are the same. The details that make Babylon 5 great aren't the things DS9 copied. They're different enough that they're both worth watching and don't interfere with each other. Watching one doesn't create spoilers for the other. Not sure why anyone other than JMS cares. Lots of actors appeared on both shows, so obviously it didn't matter to them.
>>
>>217976670
JMS is one of the most self-satisfied blowhards in human history. Once you learn to see his authorial imprint it's difficult to watch an entire episode of B5
>>
>>217977455
Watch the pilot, anon. Not everything is a smooth seque into S1, but it's still worth watching.
>>
>>217975455
>>217977455

It's really hard to shake the opinion that anyone coming into Babylon 5 for the first time should absolutely skip this pilot movie and just go to season 1.
So much of this gets ignored or retconned that it's hardly worth the bother. Most of the human cast gets replaced by the start of the show proper.

Also, absolutely under NO circumstances should you watch "In The Beginning" before you've seen season 5. It's a prequel written as a prequel, i.e. after you've already seen the rest of show up to the point it was made. It spoils a fuckload of plot.

It's very 90s liberal, I couldn't stomach the union episode for that reason. They should have rose up and scalped J'kar.
>>
>>217977649
I mistyped, I should have writtedn season 4. But the effect is pretty much the same.

In The Beginning was iirc the first TVM they made when B5 was bought by TNT, to air before they started showing Season 5 on the new network. It was supposed to be an intro for everyone with the new channel that hadn't seen seasons 1-4 on PTEN.

Imho most of the TVM's are just mediocre and unnessecary. I think the only one I liked was Thirdspace. They can all be safeley ignored without affecting your viewing of the main show whatsoever
>>
>>217977500
And when he tries to make his "important points" it is always so hamfisted and annoying.

Just a few things I remember.

>Bar Rednecks about some plague "It was probably those Vorlons who poisoned our drinking water" while wise Doctor Moralfag shakes his head "nothing ever changes"

and of course the eugenics purity episode where some alien bioweirdo kills everyone who has "impure" genetics so they genocided their whole species

He also lets J'Kar literally say the words "Never Again" and refers to Jews

It is so fucking insufferable, which is a shame, because otherwise the characters and the main story is great
>>
Entertainment first, the message second. They don't make such movies and shows anymore, even JMS himself.

>>
>>217981879
I don't have a great memory of individual episodes, but TKO immediately comes to mind. There were a lot of serialized episodes in Season 1 that really didn't do much. Then you have Season 5 which is pretty much pointless outside of the Centauri stuff and the finale. Season 2-3 is where it really hit its stride.
>>
Anyone else feel like the Sheridan-Garibaldi conflict was a bit overstated? It would have been better if brainwashed Garibaldi just gradually wore Sheridan down until he finally snapped at him, but it almost seemed like Sheridan was just being arch and looking to start a fight every time they crossed path. I don't know if it was the direction or just Boxleitner's performance, but it was a little too much for me
>>
>>217977745
>It's very 90s liberal, I couldn't stomach the union episode for that reason. They should have rose up and scalped J'kar
To be fair that's a lot of sci-fi from the era. Hell, it was only more grounded and/or cynical sci-fi shows that pushed back against that. The Reimagined BSG dismissed such attitudes at naive and even had president Baltar on New Caprica badmouth unions for being lazy and strike-happy, for example.

We spent the entire 2000s & early 2010s shitting on anything old. Look at the way people still react to TOS.

Sure, the older CGI looks like shit but I get it, it was a spectacle at the time. I remember thinking Gran Turismo 2 looked like real life when it came out.
>>
Having finished the pilot, I guess I better understand why we're supposed to slightly prefer Molari over G'Kar. I always preferred G'Kar for being the obvious Soviet Union/Iran stand-in to the Centauri as the US/Britain
>>
>>217982677
I trust Trek to be more left-wing, but B5 is more kino. Now we just need another successor show with radical politics about overthrowing the Earth Alliance.

6 episodes in. Only complaint so far is the soundtrack, it's dated and sloppy even for the era, so much for Tangerine Dream.. The effects hold up well considering the budget, and the short space renders are quite charming when you consider computing power of that period
>>

The soundtrack is one of the best parts, sounds like you just have bad taste.

While rough around the edges, Crusade did have some potential to be fair. But WB decided they knew better than the show runner what order to air the episodes in. And when you've got season long story threads, that just kneecapped any chance Crusade had.
Legends of the Rangers, I just don't know what they were going for. You can obviously point and laugh at the utterly goofy "targeting system". But the story and characters were pretty staid and boilerplate for what should've been a rich canvas of the Rangers exploits.

Missing the episode Midnight on the Firing Line.
>>
>>217993470
Bill Mumy was pretty unhappy about how the writers used Lennier late in the franchise. I don't recall if his order required celibacy for his position, but if so, that's not really being an incel since he chose that life. If it wasn't required, he probably could have found a wife easy enough but the writers made him into a friend zoned beta orbiter.
>>217992002
Never gave the soundtrack very much thought. It's pretty standard 90s electronic music that was used for low budget shows. Do you like the music from Xena better? Anyway, not every scifi series can a Bear McCreary working for them.
>>
>>217986360
Go for it, anon. I'm up to episode 20 now. Was rolling my eyes at the jewishness in one episode, but it wasn't *that* bad - and then David Warner showed up in the next one, rendering everything kino.

He was a great guy the whole show, his character assassination along with the first half of season 5 are the only black marks on the show. It's a miracle it got made when it did and the producers were able to tamp down on his fetishes. Imagine if B5 was made today and JMS had full reign.
>>
I'm on season 5 and every episode feels like filler.

Only slightly rage baiting here because a few of these make sense and others, well, not so much.
>Henry Cavill as John Sheridan – The fearless commander of Babylon 5, balancing diplomacy and war.
>Eva Green as Delenn – The wise and enigmatic Minbari leader, caught between two worlds.
>Elizabeth Olsen as Susan Ivanova – The fierce second-in-command, known for her sharp mind and iron will.
>Jason Statham as Michael Garibaldi – The no-nonsense head of security with a troubled past.
>Dave Bautista as G’Kar – The Narn warrior turned reluctant prophet, seeking freedom for his people.
>Willem Dafoe as Londo Mollari – The ambitious Centauri noble whose choices shape the fate of an empire.
>Rami Malek as Morden – The sinister emissary of the Shadows, whispering chaos into the ears of leaders.
>Scarlett Johansson as Talia Winters – A telepath ensnared in the dangerous web of Psi Corps.
>Jennifer Lawrence as Lyta Alexander – The powerful psychic whose connection to the Vorlons changes everything.
>Daniel Kaluuya as Dr. Stephen Franklin – The brilliant but conflicted chief medical officer.
>Kosh Naranek – (CGI & Voice) The enigmatic Vorlon ambassador, guiding events from the shadows.
I don't get why so many remake castings propose having Dave Bautista in them. Is his PR people doing this?

I've been rewatching it because of this.

But they say that, but actually it's the pilot and only some of the episodes seem there. If you're in the USA the full set is also on "the Roku channel" which is basically free with an adblock

https://therokuchannel.roku.com/details/79f30173b4a356ac8e25c90c91a3864a/midnight-on-the-firing-line

It's both better and worse than I remember. Upside and downside of the pilot compared to the actual series: we lost a qt Japanese commander (yes Ivanova is great but still) but blonde psi corps member from the show is way hotter than Lyta. Also G'kar's characterization is way less weird in the actual show.

Here's my chance to post this weird song. A long time ago I thought it was a very pretentious try hard (but kind of good) lyricist sharing his spoken word poetry to an emo rock soundtrack.

Later I found out it's actually a monologue from the guy that wrote Babylon 5, talking about how he got beaten to within an inch of his life and came back from it. From which he apparently gained an eternal hatred of San Diego, a slight psychosis, and a mania to "tell stories".

Is it like Star Trek Deep Space Nine? I don't mean that as a shitpost I just have a buddy showing me DS9 recently and I've been enjoying it really well and am looking for other space shows like it
>>
>>218009491
its almost identical in many ways but it has its own more gritty and realistic vibe as opposed to treks utopian futurism, and much more cohesive and well written charachter/story arcs and a bigger emphasis on these stories
>>
>>218009491
The basic premise is the same. Isolated space station, lots of aliens and traffic pass through, multi-season story arc about a possible war. The long-time rumours are that JMS (creator of B5) pitched the ideas to Paramount as a new Trek series, they rejected him, stole the pitch, and used it as the setup for DS9. So instead JMS went off and did the series he originally wanted himself, B5.

It's lower budget (especially in season 1) and some of the acting is rough (again, early on) but it's better written and has better characters and better world building & foreshadowing.
>>
>>218009491
DS9 feels like a shithole outpost with mostly outlaws, B5 feels like the space United Nations with actual ambassadors sent by governments, very different atmosphere despite similarities

>>218009491
imagine if DS9 wasnt just about bajorans and cardasians but instead had a united nations system on the station and was a hub for a much more complex interstellar geopolitics and goings on, also its much more grounded realization of the future where humanity has pretty much just established its self as a viable power after enduring a few initial conflicts and is still fraught with all manor of economic and social issues rather than being some idealistic Utopian future like startrek. the charachters stories and overarching plot are all relatively full and rich and for the most part the show feels much more like there is a clear vision/direction underlying the whole thing rather than just making shit up as it goes

Pretty sure PTEN told JMS he couldn't have his tranny storyline so he came up with the excuse of not being able to get the makeup right rather than admit he caved to PTEN's demands. Given the time period the show was released, PTEN probably saved the show by stopping some of his excesses.

No one gave a shit about such things back then, especially on some niche, unheard of sci-fi show. While the makeup wasn't great what really killed it was they couldn't get the (male) voice changer to work. It was simply easier and cheaper to drop the idea.

No one "cared" because everyone knew not to force it into people's faces. But I'm sure you'll double, triple, and quadruple down on your fantasy that trannies were always accepted in society until a few years ago. The mentally ill never can admit they're wrong and are unable to resist the temptation to derail threads with their need for external validation of their degeneracy.

It's a slog to watch. Only a couple of the actors are good and unlike shows like Star Trek they never learned to make them the focus. The whole thing is drenched in a weird American conservative Mormon military worship.

Trannies back then were in several scifi stories simply because it was just a silly futuristic idea that was obviously nonsensical, would never become reality, and just funny to think about. It's tough to come up with decent future ideas after a while. You have things like hover cars, food that cooks super fast, teleporters, ray guns. But then people want to see how society is different so you need wacky clothing, weird languages and different culture to laugh at such as men dressing in skirts. They weren't supposed to be mutilating themselves, chopping off their body parts then claiming to be the opposite sex. That's too unbelievable even for scifi

No one "cared" because it was a standard sci-fi trope and they weren't being told by the media what to be angry at.

That's cute. Did Epstein give you that opinion?

That first-time viewer reporting back in. Almost done with S1 now. Might start another Babylon 5 thread myself once I'm on to S2, if there isn't one in the catalogue then. Shame there isn't a B5 general (with occasional /trek/ discussion, as a refuge from /trek/ and nutrek generally).

I like how Garibaldi is a Looney Tunes fan. He knows that most TV is trash, but he did know the one thing that can rise about it all.

The people who faction war over DS9 and B5 are usually overlooking 1 very important detail about the conversation. That being, you don't have to choose one. You can watch and enjoy both of them.

I think you should, it's just another show where odd 60 year olds that just started posting here a few years ago because it's edgy do not truly understand the series. It's more than worth the usual discussion.

Yes, you can, however it's still important to acknowledge what happened. DS9 is popular, famous, and everyone lumps such praise on it like it came out of nothing as a genius inspiration of star trek writers. When the truth is that they're despicable for stealing the effortful work of someone else, claiming it as their own, and relegating his series to semi-obscurity. It's things like that which destroyed all writing creativity in the industry. Why bother creating fiver year long intricate stories that are thoroughly thought out, with tons of characters and arcs, including dozens of backup plots in case actors depart? It'll just get stolen. Plus audiences don't give a shit if you just wing it and make it all up on the fly now
>>
>>218014546
kek, the projection is unreal here. no one is angry, no one is laughing with you, we are all laughing at you.
