The Japanese film industry still hasn't recovered from the 1992 economic bubble. Most of their films/tv still have that low budget/jav look. I watch a lot of jap cinema but mostly from the 1950s to 1980s, just recently I started watching more contemporary films, it's harder to find good recent stuff but there are good filmmakers out there. I still avoid most korean cinema tho lol, if I want asian stuff I rather watch 80s-90s south east asia or old jap kinos.
