Definitely the future.

We've got 1 billion years left until the sun's luminosity increases such that all liquid water will boil away. If we start the counting with the Cambrian Explosion (500 mya), multicellular life is only 1/3 through its time on our planet.

I'd probably start with the near future and go further and further, assuming I get to keep the Delorean and it doesn't run out of fuel or something.

If it was a one time, one way trip, I'm thinking I'd go for 10,000 years. Humans should still be around, although most things would probably be unrecognizable.
