Almost no one actually clues Shinji into what's actually going on and no one lore dumps the kid, so his confusion is the same confusion as the audience.All you need to know is that the world wide cataclysmic event will bring everyone together and merge their souls, and some characters want this. The REAL story of Eva isn't the backstory lore, it's the characters and a broader message about human interactions and fears. Asuka is a huge cunt in part because that's part of the message. Being around Cunts is just part of life. You need to open up, get out, go outside, and interact with people. Open up.

But I more or less figured everything out and the rest is via context. They quite literally explain ad nauseam what the tang-world and singularity is. It's an obvious stand-in for a secularized Heaven.They also talk about scientific divisions that investigate spirits and souls, so it's a hard scientific fact that spiritual energy exists in their world. The rest is context. The series is a bit mysterious, but they more or less explain everything in the actual show, even if it's a bit obtuse about it.

>>218005529>The series is incredibly shizo and they can't decide what they want to doI think that's something somebody going in cold turkey would think, because to me it was a pretty natural progression and surprisingly efficient blend of genres, themes, and tones.From the start, it's very much this grandiose drama about the nature of war and how it destroys young lives, particularly the nature of conscription (this is illustrated by the first episode with Shinji being guilt-tripped into fighting because he doesn't want Rei to suffer any more). Shinji is obviously not meant for war; he's weak, timid, shy, and mentally fragile, being deeply traumatized and often retreating away from HQ whenever the fight is over (there's a whole scene in episode 4 I swear is ripped from Deer Hunter where he's wandering around in a field in the mountains ruminating on life). Rei in contrast, is literally the perfect soldier, who takes orders easily and is completely emotionally detatched from everything outside of the conflict (because she is literally engineered to fight after all). Asuka on the other hand is the typical prideful soldier, treating the war as some sort of personal test and looking down upon everyone else and relishing in her status as a soldier. Misato plays the role of an officer obsessing over the war to the detriment of both herself and those under her command, while Gendo and Seele of course are the puppet masters pulling the strings.When the show introduces Asuka, you also get this teen dynamic clearly taken from 80s American teen movies, especially John Hughes (slyly referenced in the last episode that parodies this alongside Japanese HS SoL tropes). This is largely to develop the characters and their relationships with one another outside of the war, and I found it to be surprisingly clever and a refreshing change of pace that eases us into the insanity later on.And of course then everything ties up neatly, apart from Kaworu who I fucking hate to this day

The sole part of any of the Rebuilds that I thought was worth it was Gendo's conversations with Shinji near the end of 4. I'm butchering the line, but it was him looking at Shinji and thinking," Yui, there you are," like he's realizing his life didn't have to essentially end when Yui died, he still had Shinji. In a meta sense it's also interesting to see where Anno's sympathies develop as he gets older, there's no way he ever intended Gendo to be this developed when they were first coming up with the character.
