Absolute KINO.
One of the best usages of close-ups all throughout. The camera and the montage are outstanding, fluid and effectively work in the tension build up. The budget is spartan but the craft is top notch.
Anon from the last thread: you must watch it.

The extreme close-ups are not random: they enhance a claustrophobic mood, they are there to enrich the visual story and they do their job damn right!
>>
>>218127762
>pad their Letterboxd numbers
This is more telling of you than those people. Most use imdb or letterboxd just to catalogue what they watched, not for competitive autism that has nothing to do with cinema. You seem to be projecting.
>>
I get your disdain for close-ups, though, but in this film they are masterfully used to create a real impact.

Well there is no French equivalent to Kes, The Wicker Man, Threads, The Third Man (the list goes on). The only genre the French seem to do is a girl fucking a strange older man with deliberately bad editing (that means it's art btw). Not saying British cinema is categorically better, just that it's underappreciated. This is before you even get to Lean, Powell, Roeg, the comedy giants, all the American filmmakers who are actually British etc.

Marcel Carné's proto-noir films are on par with The Third Man and not enitrely dissimilar stylistically.

>Kes, The Wicker Man, Threads
I think these three films are very much one offs. Britain has lots of great films that seem to be a genre of film by themselves that are never built upon. Almost like the people who made them are just outliers in a system which otherwise prefers predictable and palatable films.

The Wicker Man especially is one where I scratch my head and wonder how there are not more British films like it. Its so British, its so unique and yet there is only one. Sigh. I think thats why French cinema is more respected because they actually respect film and the art of making it, whereas in Britain nobody cares for fluffy ideas.

Imamura was Ozu's assistant btw, in case you didn't know.
>Recommend me his five essential films to start with.
You should probably start with the stuff from the 60s first, watch these three:
>Pigs and Battleships (1961)
>Intentions of Murder (1964)
>The Pornographers (1966)
inb4 not recommending The Insect Woman because i haven't seen it yet

>Imamura was Ozu's assistant
I was aware of it and already heard that he ended up with a completely different approach to filmmaking. That's what made me interested in the first place and anon (you?) mentioning him reminded me about it.
>You should probably start with the stuff from the 60s
Thanks for the pointers. I'll do just that and add The Insect Woman to the list as well.

I love her but she was insane. She would carry pasta and tomato sauce around with her in her luggage. Also, she never left her shit in a hotel. She would scoop it out of the bowl and put it in baggies to dispose of secretly. She was afraid the hotel would re-route the plumbing to inspect her stools.

Already saw it alongside Olympia, both are truly monumental films for very different reasons. When it comes to recent Olympics I feel like Brazil 2016 and China would be worthy of similar treatment for opposite reasons, sadly if it hasn't already happened it won't ever.
