Absolute KINO.One of the best usages of close-ups all throughout. The camera and the montage are outstanding, fluid and effectively work in the tension build up. The budget is spartan but the craft is top notch. Anon from the last thread: you must watch it.
>>218129499>usages of close-ups all throughout.Odds of me liking it aren't very high right now.
I can see it tbqh
>>218129972The extreme close-ups are not random: they enhance a claustrophobic mood, they are there to enrich the visual story and they do their job damn right!
>>218127762>pad their Letterboxd numbersThis is more telling of you than those people. Most use imdb or letterboxd just to catalogue what they watched, not for competitive autism that has nothing to do with cinema. You seem to be projecting.
I get your disdain for close-ups, though, but in this film they are masterfully used to create a real impact.

French cinema is generally overrated and the British canon underrated. There comes a point in your film journey when you realise the former was actively suppressing and dismissing the latter out of sheer spite.

Filipinos are the most powerful filmmakers in the world.
>>218140612Well there is no French equivalent to Kes, The Wicker Man, Threads, The Third Man (the list goes on). The only genre the French seem to do is a girl fucking a strange older man with deliberately bad editing (that means it's art btw). Not saying British cinema is categorically better, just that it's underappreciated. This is before you even get to Lean, Powell, Roeg, the comedy giants, all the American filmmakers who are actually British etc.
>>218141016Marcel Carné's proto-noir films are on par with The Third Man and not enitrely dissimilar stylistically.

was funny to see Trump here, I didn't expect that
>>218141732He's right, it's not really a western, more of a rural family drama, and he's also right in that it is great.
>>218141016>Kes, The Wicker Man, ThreadsI think these three films are very much one offs. Britain has lots of great films that seem to be a genre of film by themselves that are never built upon. Almost like the people who made them are just outliers in a system which otherwise prefers predictable and palatable films. The Wicker Man especially is one where I scratch my head and wonder how there are not more British films like it. Its so British, its so unique and yet there is only one. Sigh. I think thats why French cinema is more respected because they actually respect film and the art of making it, whereas in Britain nobody cares for fluffy ideas.
>>218142234>The Wicker Manhave you ever looked at any of the TV productions BBC was doing in the late '60s/70s like Penda's Fen, Whistle and I'll Come to You, A Warning to the Curious, Robin Redbreast (probably a bunch of others)?
