I don't understand how any fan would even want Mulder and Scully to appear in the reboot. They'd be in their 60s (Gillian Anderson is 57, but Scully is older). They'd only be there in a limited role as mentors or informants. They way the revival seasons ended, if you want to call that an ending, was so abhorrent, there's no decent way to continue their story. Also, any reference to the original show's mythology (black oil, CSM, ABH, William, colonization, etc.) is an insta-loss. The only way this show can succeed is it it tries to distance itself from the jumbled mess the original show turned into.

Anyways, when David Nutter, Kim Manners or Rob Bowman directed one of Darin's scripts they approched it like they were making a normal dramatic/horror episode. If you listen to the commentary track for Jose Chung, Rob Bowman says he didn't understand the script most of the time. Kim Manners was dead worried he was going to be fired because of Humbug. In the revival Darin Morgan directed his two episodes, and he made everyone act like they were in on the joke. Not just Rhys Darby, Kumail Nanjiani, and Brian Huskey, who are comedy actors, but he also made Duchovny and Anderson act like they were in a SNL skit.
