It was maybe the last great TV show that will ever be made.
>>
>>218171763
pure kino and Lynch's magnum opus
I can't believe it's already been almost 10 years
>>
It has its moments, Dougie is kino, but it looks like shit.
>>
I just finished a rewatch of the original series today and I'm starting The Return tomorrow for the first time.
I am aware it's not really like Twin Peaks and more like subsequent Lynch movies. Wish me luck.
>>
>>218171763
The last great season of television.
>>
the only good TV show made in the 21st century and perhaps the last. (and i didn't even like it that much, i think the first 10 eps are more bad than good, the last 8 more good than bad)

RIP Lynch, i only found out he died 2 months after it happened when i happened to catch the oscars garbage and he was briefly on screen as one of the people who died
>>
>>218172053
>Dougie is kin
I'm convinced the only people that unironically think this have serious actual mental problems
>>218172061
honestly, if I could go back in time and tell myself to skip it and never watch it I would
it's fucking awful anon, esp if you loved the comfy vibes and character interactions from 1-2 + fwwm

too bad about the rest of the show
what an unwatchable MESS
they really treated albert like shit too which hurt to watch
>>

NTA, but Dougie is Kino. You were filtered.
>>
>>218172218
albert's actor was dying of cancer during the show, i felt they treated him well considering

exactly this but for every other character in s3 too
what an utter waste
>>
I have said this before, but I wish they found a way to include Annie and Harry.

Harry's absence in particular was very much felt, especially since the main plot of S1-2 is Coop and Harry being BFFs.
>>
>>218172386
Ontkean was asked to come back, but he had retired from acting and didn't want to come back, which is fair.
>>
>Got a light?

What did he mean by this?
>>
>>218172429
Yeah, that is what was said, and I hope they are being truthful on that.

Ontkean was actually looking for his original jacket to use in season 3 before informing the main person he was searching with that he wasn't going to be in it, and Ontkean didn't give a reason at that time.
>>
>>218172493
hope he was just happy with his life and it wasn't something serious

man i'm still fucking annoyed at FWWM doing poorly and not getting the other TP films, i'll always hate critics and audiences for that

what were they going to have him do for 16 episodes thought?

pretty sure we were meant to get a solo cooper film and a solo bowie film (and i've read a solo audrey film too, which if true I expect was what became mulholland drive)

david lynch deserved better, fuck hollywood

If you just stay open minded and just enjoy the ride, I think you'll love it. It really is utterly unique. Twin Peaks was my favorite show, but The Return surpassed it. The vibe is closer to Fire Walk With Me than to the series, so if you enjoyed FWWM (and Lynch's other movies) you should enjoy it.

I can't even imagine watching it as it debuted.
I was alive when twin peaks was on, and I was vaguely aware it was a show on tv adults talked about until they didn't.
And growing up I had a weird relationship with Lynch. I saw lost highway when I was maybe 14, and I watched it because the warnings on HBO said 'nudity.'
And I remember being so fucking confused and annoyed by the movie, but it was stuck in my head forever. Every couple of years I would try to rewatch it and see if maybe it finally made any sense to me.
Wasn't until I was a lot older that I could really watch and appreciate a lynch movie. Lost Highway still confuses and annoys me, but I can appreciate it a lot more.

>>
>>218173480
I think you just need to find your own primer.
If you turn on one of his movies expecting a nice linear plot that makes total sense forwards and backwards, you're going to be confused.
But if you can look at it as film-as-dream, or the surrealism.

ill give it a shot. basically it was kino because it was edgelordesque anti-kino
bringing back the coop we all know right away would've been too easy
big bro knew your expectations and mirrored them into a warped mockery. people like coop because he's a goodhearted sweetie? well here's ONLY that part of him, effectively turning him into a garden variety retard. but he's a retard with great intuition. which is a cool comment in itself, it's like lynch always goes on about, the childishness of art and creation, finding the big fish. obviously plot wise dougie was incomplete because wasn't brought back correctly. but it was a perfect melding of form, function and troll

I felt the beginning of season 1 was ass but got better as it went along to the point of being great when everyone's stories were being told. Season 2 continued this and it was great until the finale. Season 3 was hot garbage all the way through and I had a genuinely bad time watching it as they decided to do nothing that was carrying season 1 and 2. The character drama was great. Whatever season 3 was completely shit the bed in that regard. I do not idolize anyone for being weird or doing something different so I'm neutral on david lynch.

Idk honestly. I find it genuinely perplexing as a work because it seems to effortlessly combine the aesthetic sensibilities of Neil Breen with moments of genuine artfulness and sensitivity, and kind of even flow between the two in individual scenes. I cant help but feel it must be intentional, I cant make sense of it otherwise unless Lunch has a retarded twin that he got to direct every other scene with him. My favorite moment in the show is the scene right after the cherry pie scene, where Dougie is sitting at the restaurant and you get this intense feeling of nostalgia.

I thought the show was poisoned by snark and failed to create anything particularly interesting.

i watched it once and I remember the sex scene in the first episode which had a nice b-movie sci fi feel to it overall, the quality nuke episode even though it felt retro in a bad way, relationship between mclachlan and watts which is like a throwback to some lynch movie video works, the belushi arc, the dark cooper arc, the final rugpull... i mean it was ok but it failed to capture a sense of place.

It's, for once in the history of TV revivals, an actual sequel to the show from 20 years prior and not a shallow repeat.

The world of Twin Peaks dramatically shifted at the end of the original run to the Black Lodge's side, and this show and the movie are the result.

I've come to the view that s3 = kino were it essentially its own thing, but it's a followup to a show that Lynch didn't get to go full lynch on and became beloved and iconic in its own right. the cops in South Dakota are trying to get in that apartment because there's probably a dead body in there. I don't know how or if this connects to anything but I'm enjoying this goofiness.
this is basically what I expected from clips I've seen and what I've read

even if I don't end up enjoying much I can power through all this
Ben and Jerry's scene felt kinda like their scenes in the original run, but with how it's shot and how it sounds, it seems like we're seeing these two guys for real as opposed to TV character versions of them. Ditto for Jacoby. It seemed like we were getting a peak at him just being a guy.
Lucy on the other hand still has that heightened magic shining through the otherwise dry presentation.

Kyle McLachlan played six variations of Cooper in S3:

- Evil Coop
- Original Dougie
- Retarded Coop Dougie
- Actual Coop
- Actual Coop's Tulpa
- "Richard" Coop

All recognisably slightly different. Pretty impressive.

The show is a masterpiece by the way. I cannot believe it even exists.

I thought this show would be a cool mysery drama with beautiful cinematography and music but it turns out it's like a paranormal arthouse flick with a demon possessing the killer or some shit and i'm like naahhh fuck this i'm out. TV show made for guys who wear 5 panel hats and carhart

reach, nice goalpost reset attempt though. he supported ai "as a tool for creativity" and remastered IE with AI as part of his official canon forever, slobbering all over how amazing the tech was. what more do you need, his personal ai gooning collection too?

The fact that they played the whole season without background music and then it all suddenly comes back when coop reawakens after the coma was such a cathartic moment.

I agree with the theory that after saving Diane from the black lodge and defeating Bob in the orb, the real coop went back to Janey-E and Sonny Jim, and the cooper that warped to the alternate timeline where Laura Palmer never died through mile 430 was a tulpa. The tulpa doesn't get excited over coffee and shoots cowboys over harassing a waitress, among other giveaways.

okay, now I remember that there were two coops in the end. I still think that the guy who went back to his family is the tulpa, and the real coop went through mile 430, but his ritual with diane changed him into richard, who does not behave like the original coop

I'm with you. While it's nice to imagine Coop having a happy ending, that's literally what a tulpa is for. It makes more sense for him to keep falling in deeper.

Bong-Ex Machina

..ffs....that was the worse thing about the entire show.

All the problems that Bob caused, and it's instantly solved by a random nobody S3 character getting the all powerful dishwasher glove of destiny to defeat the source of all evil in Twin Peaks.... fuck you Lynch, horrible

Couldn't give the dishwasher power glove to Cooper? Y'know, the main character the entire franchise?
>>
>>218187831
I liked the green fist. The Green Fist sounds like Lynch feeding the fans what they wanted to see, and then the next episode seems like the ending he actually wanted to write.

>>
>>218172351
>>218172381
sadly, some compromise crept into Lynchs script.
the lady that evil coop/Audrey's son beat up was supposed to be Audrey. Fenn read the script and diddnt like it, refused to do it.
Lynch had to change that scene and make up some other scenes for Fenn.
thats why they dont have anything to do with the story and feel like pointless filler.
>>
>>218187867
whats with all you s3 apologists contantly taking joy in the misguided thought that lynch is intentionally fuckig with 'fans' of the show
first of all its not true, but if it was, wouldn't that just be ugly and spitedul in the EXACT same way that the last jedi was?
I don't get you people, it's sadistic, not fun or entertaining and you're just ghouls for constantly pointing out how bad the show is on purpose and here's why thats a good thing
it sucks, plain and simple, its bad because it's technically VERY poor filmmaking and there was NOTHING that went over my head, in fact it was all pretty obvious and dull
>>
>>218188750
pretty much this
I love most of his stuff, the weird shit is cool and enjoayble but something about s3 (everything) felt off in a bad way, not in an intentional way
the editing especially was just awful and nothing flowed or felt good, it takes you out of the show actively and constantly by drawing attention to itself
>>
>>218184521
He would probably say "GOOD MORNING, SAR" in a thick Indian accent and laugh at you. Basically the same response you always get.

what show were you watching in s1-s2 that made you think anything else would be expected?
I expected subversion
didn't expect quite so much or for some of it to be so dumb, sure >>218179343 but I still expected it
there's nothing un-Lynchian or not-Twin Peaks like about s3, it's on par with the rest of the show far as everything but how comparatively slick it looked film tech and effects wise

damn shame the original sheriff couldn't do it, but aside from that
>>
>>218188750
I loved it personally.

>>218188863
>what show were you watching in s1-s2 that made you think anything else would be expected?

s1/2 are incredbily straight forward, soapy and not subversive at all wtf
I think midwits like you get hung up on viewing lynch as some 5d chess master who's always layering in these deep profound meanings that simply aren't there
he makes simple films, with absractions, that he really isn't even sure their meaning, it's all for fun
there's nothing fun about s3 unless you're some kind of overthinking redddit sperg midwit
THAT is the kind of person lynch is making fun of
there's no meaning, it's just him fucking around, sometimes that works and we get entertaining gold and sometimes it's just bad and we get s3 or inland empire
>>218189002

Dougies the unstoppable hero. He cant fail no matter what he does. This is the antithesis of the unstoppable villain, a common trope in Lynch’s filmography.

>midwits like you get hung up on viewing lynch as some 5d chess master who's always layering in these deep profound meanings that simply aren't there
lol, of course he's not, sometimes there's depth there but sometimes he's just fucking with people because he knows people expect all this depth there

Did you really take the scenes of an English chav punching BOB to death with his gloved super-fist at face value?

Didn't the subsequent scenes with Cooper's face superimposed over the clock recontextualise what you just saw?

>but it looks like shit.
Some of looks pretty flat, but Return is often breathtaking when Lynch gets more experimental

Also like another anon mentioned I think to some extent it was intentional, the USA of 2017 was a much uglier place than 1990
>>
>>218189139
>I don't take Lynch as seriously as your strawman
yet youre yapping about how cool it is being anti-film subversion
A. youre wrong B. that's bad entertainment, and not enjoyable to anyone but the most pretentious midwits
all I wanted from s3 was a good story, good writing, and good character arcs
not once did it accomplish any of that in its entire 18 hour run time
that's not subversion, it's a shitty waste of time, just like the last jedi
my expectations of enjoying myself with interesting characters and a story worth watch were certainly subverted however
>>
>>218189215
yeah honestly that was my read as well

>>218189230

wtf does "anti-film" even mean?
>all I wanted from s3 was a good story, good writing, and good character arcs
again I don't think we were watching the same show in s1/2, think you got filtered
>that's not subversion
no subversion would have been exactly what you're saying you wanted, that would have been a subversion of what the rest of the show was
I'm doubting now you've even watched it since s2 became nearly straight fucking camp at points
>>
>>218189216
>Some of looks pretty flat,
no it all looks sub-film student tier
the color grading is nightmarish with all kinds of technical issues, its UGLY and not in an intentional way, its amateurish
>>
>>218189216

>Return is often breathtaking when Lynch gets more experimental

It's breathtaking when it's not experimental, as well. The scene with Dougie (Mr. Jackpots) arriving in the casino amidst the slot machines surrounded by light and noise is extraordinary kino, the colour photography is incredible. It's hyperreality in the Baudrillardian sense but also in a much simpler sense in that after 25 years in extra dimensional purgatory, Coop is overwhelmed by the sights and sensations of the real world, it's like a condensed overdose of reality. god DAMN twin peaks is good.
