I love how much people griped about this game's minor issues when it initially came out but now it's regarded as a classic that set a standard we need to return to (hence why we're now even seeing in the imitators built on being spiritual successors to it be being "F.E.A.R.-likes", i.e. Trepang, Phantom Line, etc.). Really shows how much the Industry has gone down hill.I was an ardent fan of F.E.A.R. from release until now and will STILL shill for it. It's supposed "flaws" are negligible and always highly subjective ("not enough 'environment diversity'!", "the horror and action scenes don't gel together well enough!", etc.), while the things it does right are a lot harder to argue against about:The contrasting combination of sleek, high-tech, Tacticool Tom Clancey-esque special-forces action vs. grotesque, visceral, often surreal & even borderline hallucinogenic psychological horror is an extremely powerful aesthetic that hasn't been used nearly enough in horror-media yet, and the tight combat, controls and AI make the gunplay just as frenetic, pulse-pounding, visually-interesting and fun as it was back in 2004. The environments obviously aren't Half-Life 2 levels of organic or diverse, and the industrial zone/corporate office setting CAN feel a bit drab, but they capture an eerie, liminal sort of feeling that is perfect for horror. The opening cinematic is also one of my all-time favorites in the history of horror-fiction, as it almost perfectly encapsulates that fusion of Tacticool Action & Visceral Horror while also being cryptic and eerie enough to totally hook an audience without giving too much away. The shot at the end where you realize Paxton Fettle; i.e. a someone who's supposed to be some type of straight-laced modern commander of a tactical special-forces unit; is for some reason crouched over a human corpse and eating it raw off the floor like an animal is a piece of horror imagery that still lives rent-free in my brain even 20 years later.

>>218176176The way he screams to wake up th clones and his scream turns into a digital compression mess is some A+ sound design. I’m like you, will shill this game till the day I die and will always use the first two levels as a shining example of level design. The only reason I don’t replay it more often is the later levels with snipers around every corner just completely undermines the games strengths in close action combat. Almost forgot best grenades in a shooter ever.

>>218176352You clearly have good taste.>The way he screams to wake up th clones and his scream turns into a digital compression mess is some A+ sound design.I 100% agree. They mixed it in such a way that the sudden scream is just slightly louder than all the audio prior, so it catches you completely off-guard. The top-tier Voice-Acting by Peter Lurie also made it 100% believable as a GENUINE, guttural, authentic scream of pain & terror rather than some VA just "acting one out". That scream coming from a grown-ass adult male; one who even by that super-early point in what the Player has seen so far is someone presumed to have at least some kind of hard-edged Military Experience; communicates to the audience exactly HOW scary this unknown force is, and that they should be afraid of it too.And this is ALL communicated to the audience barely using any actual words. It's all 100% mood, cryptic visuals and implications that anyone watching instinctually understands, even if subconsciously. Communicating things to the audience like that completely non-verbally, especially levels of threat or reasons for a sense of dread, is such a lost art in the modern era of Horror.

>>218178155The lighting, parallax texture mapping, stencil shadows, physics, environmental destruction, and the smartly deployed enemy AI made for as good a John Woo heroic bloodshed game as we've had. And some quality jumpscares too, not overdone.

>>218178155Graphics peaked with FEAR, Doom 3, Riddick, and Condemned. Nowadays everything looks bland as shit.
>>218178480>quality jumpscaresIt had literally two. The expansions had one each.
Overrated zoomer game. Was one of those early 7th gen cinematic slop pieces where half the game is just some kind of set piece or you listening to some faggot talk in your earpiece while you walk through a hallway. Combat is also highly overrated. Without all the bells and whistles like slow motion it's no different in terms of design than any other generic FPS.

Who remembers the nail gun from fear 2? Fuck I loved that thing, you could impale big ass nails into enemies to just about anything.
>>218179938That’s what operators do. Did we play the same game? What was cinematic about FEAR? Unless you mean FEAR 2, which leaned into console cowadooty shooter gameplay but upped the horror tenfold.
>>218176176>"the horror and action scenes don't gel together well enough!"The game relies very hard on the player himself and the playstyle he chooses imo. I actually think that playing on the highest difficulty and just slowly sneaking through the levels is by far the best way to experience it. You get to use the element of surprise on the enemies, and you get to set up the encounters the way you want with all the mines and tools the game gives you, but also going slow lets the atmosphere sink in, and makes all the horror scenes so much better.I've seen people just run and gun their way through the game, and sure it's fun to just slow mo jump kick replica soldiers one by one, but it makes the game kind of mindless and not as interesting.
>>218171837Spectral is more Half-Life than anything else. The main character's job is basically to science the fuck out of the military so they can fight transhuman ghosts.
>>218178155The way the enemy trying to duck behind cover realizes the player is diving behind the same cover and seamlessly changes his mind mid action is fucking kino.

>>218171811the idea of a ghost who's naked and haunting you is evocative but FEAR is probably the only thing that did it without feeling tawdry or exploitative. Thirteen Ghosts did it but it only makes since if you watched the backstory docs on the DVD

>>218176176The replica grunts built-on-the-cheap design clashed with the hi-future tech drone lasers, the heavy, cloaked electro ninjas, and mechs. I think FEAR was originally going to be an anthology which explains the stark contrast. Also, fun fact: most replicas wear a skull balaclava. The lower tier replicas look like discount mercs, and the assault rifle in the game is a civilian version of the g36 (HK SL8) with dual drum mags (have fun carrying those), and I guess modified for full auto. Their transports were military surplus shit: a simple armored truck and a Hind D (you can still see the soviet red star on it.) Kind of wished they committed to the surplus gear bit since it's a MIC built army, but I'm fine with what we got anyway.>>218178501Don't even get me started on FEAR 2's gunplay, mechanics, arena design, and everything must glow future tech shit.
>>218188047FEAR 2 is legitimately scary. FEAR 1 had better gunplay but FEAR 2 was way more openly scary.
