So is 4K just a complete scam or something? I have a 4K blu-ray player and a 4K TV, and every time I try to watch a 4K, the only difference I can see is that the screen is darker. I end up preferring the regular blu-ray every time because the 4K is so dark I can't make out all the details even after turning my brightness up to max. I'm convinced 4K enjoyers have deluded themselves into seeing something that isn't actually there.
>>218172433not all 4k TVs are the same. sounds like you cheaped out, brokie.
>>218172433The problem with most 4K upscales of older films is that it removes basically all the grain filter which only ever weakens the atmosphere
>>218172489This is the other thing I've noticed, the color grading is always changed to be more naturalistic, which is an artistic choice on the part of the "restorer" that I think is quite stupid.
>>218172433Funny that the bottom picture seems to do everything better except the underwater coloring
>>218172664i dont understand these color grades and definitions as well as other anons but looking at OP's picrel i overwhelmingly prefer the top to the bottom. i hate this blue tint bullshit happening everywhere. it looks like theyre standing under the 5000K white lights a fucking hospital uses. the top looks warmer and easier on the eyes
>>218172719There seems to be better contrast and color range on the bottom but the color grading is completely wrong and nullifies everything else
>>218172433Sounds like you need to adjust your HDR
>>218172433>so dark I can't make out all the details even after turning my brightness up to maxSounds like you've got the wrong RGB range set and it's crushing your blacks.Or your gamma settings are completely fucked. There's a number of things that could be causing that.
>>218172433Nothing you're describing or your pic have anything to do with 4k. Your settings are probably fucked up.
>>218172433Unless you're pixel peeping, yes, that's about right
>>218172489>The problem with most 4K upscales of older films is that it removes basically all the grain filter which only ever weakens the atmosphereIf they're doing it right, they didn't merely upscale it to 4k, they took the film negative out of storage and rescanned it.And if it's an actual older film, the grain isn't a 'grain filter', it's a an inherent analog artifact of photochemical photography.Previous HD and SD masters were often created from dupe elements, or film prints. They are a generation or 2 removed from the original photography, and with each generation, you lose detail, and the grain gets coarser. It's a copy of a copy of a copy. When they go back to the original camera negative you get to see the all the detail that was captured during the original photography; detail that was previously lost in reproduction.
desaturated/cold color grading is a psyop to make us depressed cattle
>>218172433You're an idiot who needs to see an eye doctor.
Some 4k discs are fucking amazing like the original blade runner but a lot of them are ai upscaled and look like shit. The first Terminator has a little bit of ai but still looks great and is the definitive home version of the movie. The T2 4k is absolute trash and the Blu Ray is better. I'm a big 4k collector. It's not worth it though unless you have high end stuff and real surround sound. Blu Ray looks good enough most of the time, but a good 4k disc will blow it out of the water
>>218172433Film>VHS>DVD>Blu Ray>Niggers>4K
>>218172719That’s because it uses the dci p3 white point which is fucking weird and green for no reason. The colorist was probably trying to match the cinema grade.
>>218172433Lol I'm just never replacing my Ultimate DVD.
>>218172557In most cases, the attempt is made to make it as close to the original color grading and uhd allowing a greater range of colors is closer to the look of film.Obviously there are fuckups and revisionism in some releases, but the trend is to try and approach film. It is also why the color often looks different than previous releases on dvd which were often limited by the smaller color range or straight up botched or revised with extra teal / orange.
>>218172433No its not a scam, you have a shitty tv. The main difference vs hd that you shpuld expect to notice on a decent tv is greater contrast (which includes deeper blacks) and richer or more natural colors which may have looked more muted on dvd or hd blu rays.
>>218178205That said, many expect greater resolution bring much greater detail and sharpness which is not really the case, or at least is negligable compared to the difference in color. Also, there are many blu rays that actually look great on modern displays and in that case the upgrade is sometimes minimal. If feal many digitally filmed movies benefit less.
>>218172433there are some great 4k scans out there. others look pretty bad
>>218172433Keep in mind, James Cameron lost his fucking mind decades ago. All his "approved" 4Ks are trash-tier.
>>218172433Some 4K are great some are just upscaled and DNR’d pieces of shit, you always gotta check reviews before buying. I also have the same problem as you OP with some 4k movies being way too dark on my OLED TV, for example star trek TMP and empire strikes back
>>218179364In general you always gotta avoid anything that is ”director approved” it results into shit like the Thief with added blue tint or In the Mood for Love with added green tint, people and their tastes obviously change over time
>>218172433I FUCKING HATE COLOUR GRADERS. DEATH TO COLOUR GRADERS.
>>218172433The t2 4k is one of the worst remasters of all time
>>218172433its a waste. The human eye can't see more than 480i 27fps anyway. smart people know this.
>>218172433>ancient BD encode vs fresh scan but destroyed with DNRYou're fucked either way
>>218180137>In general you always gotta avoid anything that is ”director approved”KEK yeah, you obviously shouldn't watch films the way the guy who created it wants it, but the way random anon wants /simagine being that pretentious
>>218180521”Director approved” in older movies means nothing, they always end up changing their movies after decades, star wars special editions are the embodiment of that. Now of course in rare instances all the previous home media versions have all been terrible compared to the theatrical version that aligned with the directors original vision but most of the time when a director approves some new scan of their older film the blurays and UHD blurays look drastically different to how they originally did
>>218172433It's there so game devs have an excuse to never try to innovate gameplay. They can just say they have to spend all their time and money on graphics to stay "competitive".
>>218174754Tucker: The Man and His Dreamabsolutely stunning 4k transfer. the best 4k quality movie i seen. no hdr/dv needed. boring ass movie tho.
>>218172433Zoomers love this garbage
>>218172433Incel thread.
>>218182415cameron doesn't give a shit about his old movies. he doesn't even know what people are having a problem with.
>>218172433>>218180137>>218182377Unironically people only care about colouring because of these comparisons. If you'd never have known the colour was different you wouldn't have given a shit.
>>218182415the avatar movies fried his brain. he doesn't even know what normal humans look anymore.
Would rather watch moldy old VHS tapes than a 4K disc.
>>218182556Okay zoomer
>>218172433Robert Patrick is relentlessly handsome.I want to kiss him relentlessly.
>>218172433No, it depends how it's done. Look up some regular movies on 4K and they look fucking fine, but big movies like T2, Aliens, True Lies, Godfathers all got the shit treatment. Something about the big studios demanding something clearer or the director's tech-savvy ego gots in the way. Here's for example a screenshot from Jean Rollin's The Iron Rose from Indicator.
Godfathers were destroyed by the 2022 4K discs, but the 2008 Coppola Restorations were fabulous and scanned in 4K.>look how they massacred my boy. comparison between 2008 and 2022https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzduA8PtpO0>wonderful featurette on how the 2008 editions were madehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIPoHeTKwns>2022 destroy featurettehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6P-PBZuvK8>ultra nerd look uphttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uw6-Kcy_UA
>>218172489like the other guy said, there is a difference between upscaling and rescanningand 4k films should have more grain, not less, since they have more detail
