What does /tv/ think of Cloverfield and the sequels to it?

I like the first one as good as any found footage film.
I think lane would have been better as a totally separate movie. An insane bunker dad gaslighting his family is kind of a good concept for a thriller imo but it’s not bad as far as tie ins go

>>218185096
This. First one was pretty entertaining as a low budget action horror slop. Second one was also pretty good and creative, but the shared universe bullshit is just retarded. 3rd one was just a shitty Event Horizon rip off. Not sure if they slapped this shitty fucking brand on any other scripts after that tho
>>
>>218184504
The arg shit was fun. But then it was all made pointless and retconned with the gayest line possible in the third one with "monsters and ghoulies coming from a tear in space".

I have only watched it once and I liked it. It was something different. Like a Godzilla movie but where you barely see the monster.

I haven't seen the sequels, but the first one was probably the most memorable theater-going experience of my life. Absolutely mind-blowing on the big screen. I've never rewatched it because I know seeing it on my TV could never compare.

I loved the first movie as a kid, its a really good kaiju movie
Haven’t seen the other two though
>>
>>218185529
I forgot they made a third one.
If I remember right they bought the script and just slapped cloverfield into again.
I assumed it was going to be shit.
No one really talks about it so I assume the 3rd one is shit?
>>
>>218187076
To be fair that’s what they said about the second one too
>>
>>218184504
The sequel with John Goodman is alright. Too bad they had to shoehorn it into the franchise, it would have been a solid 8/10 without the awkward action sci fi at the end.
>>
Found footage movies are gods gift to earth and I hate everyone who talks shit about them.

I'm sorry for what the US and it's ((allies)) have done to your people
>>
>>218184504
Cloverfield Lane is absolute kino because of Goodman.
The other two are fucking garbage.

>it would have been a solid 8/10 without the awkward action sci fi at the end
Yeah the worst part of it is the Cloverfield part. Fucking JJ m8
>>
>>218184504
Biggest wasted potential of all time.
>>
>>218184504
I loved the original and the lore around it, but then I learned about all the other movies and totally lost interest, anyone else?
>>
>>218184504
First one was an alright popcorn movie.
10 Cloverfield Lane was an excellent psychological thriller but sorta falls apart at the end when they forced the cloverfield tie-in.
Paradox was hot garbage

I appreciated it at the time it released, because it hit during a major kaiju drought, with the possible exception of Jackson’s King Kong in ‘05. Godzilla had been “retired” since 2004, and even Pacific Rim wouldn’t be for another five years. That said, it does seem kind of quaint now, considering we’ve now got not one, but two Godzilla franchises running concurrently on both sides of the Pacific.

I do still enjoy it on the level of a “shit hitting the fan” kind of movie. That’s one of my favorite subgenres, and sadly not that common, presumably because they’re expensive to make.

I’m not, so I cancel your gay ass out.
>>
What sequels? There aren't any.
I just checked the letterboxd page.
>>
>>218184504
I've only seen the MEW and Goodman movie. I liked it. I know it wasn't originally based in the universe, but that's irrelevant since I've never seen any of the other movies.
>>
>>218184504
Would have been better if it actually went somewhere. It's just 3 loosely connected sci-fi monster films as it is, there was no need for them to be connected at all.

Was there any merit to the rumor that this and Captive State were originally intended as Cloverfield movies?

>JJ Abrahams shaky cam
Did anyone besides the most conformist of NPCs see this?
I'll give you a pass for seeing it if you were under 16
>>
>>218189966
My friends dad took me and friend to see this when we were 14. He left the movie like half way through. Said the shaky cam was making him sick.
>Maybe the movie was just shit
>>
>>218184504
1st is good.
2nd is terrible.
Haven't seen the third.
>>
>>218184504
the first cloverfield was a good found footage movie, the one in the bunker was ok but less good, and the one after that is complete garbage

Which movie premise got fucked over the worst by the shakycam fad?

>>218186875
>I've never rewatched it because I know seeing it on my TV could never compare.
ah yes, a shaky camcorder recording would be just weird to watch on a TV at home.. which is exactly the target use case for a camcorder recording.

That's District 09
