1408 has this effect on me. Starts enough whimsical, very John Cusack. After the intro, act 1 is genuinely creepy. Some great moments. Haunted house done very well. Then it gets into sad and depressing territory and sheer hopelessness, and every single ending is its own unique flavor of a downer.
