You’ve hit on the biggest problem with this stupid-ass shit they tried to hand-wave off as “One in a million.” Hyperdrives are about as common as toasters and they’ve been around for thousands of years. If it was remotely possible, it would have been weaponized already. They’d have droids whose entire reason for being would be to kamikaze themselves through enemy ships and fleets. They would render all other weaponry to obsolescence. Why worry about an exhaust port when you can just hyper-ram the whole Death Star with kamikaze droids? Why build a DeathStar when you can just hyper-ram whole planets? No planet and no fleet would be safe.

And you know the saddest part? I can provide a better explanation for it than anything Retard Johnson came up with, and I’m not even getting paid. I can take care of both problems he introduced with his half-baked bullshit at the same time.
>>
>>218198387
>If it was remotely possible, it would have been weaponized already.
to be fair the lore of what hyperdrive and ftl even meant changed from New Hope where Han talks about "flying too close to a star" in hyperspace and it destroying them with later EU type stuff about hyperspace not even being "realspace"
the execution of it all, the plot, just fucking sucks and makes no sense, is this entirely forced heavy allegory in the middle of this completely off tone film that's wrecking shit about the trilogy it's in and the franchise as a whole right and left as it goes
I didn't even really have a problem with the CONCEPT of the Leia Poppins shit, that was fine, hey she force pulled herself to the ship, cool, completely in line
it was just a cringeworthily executed scene that was totally tasteless and a cheap ass moment since the actress was dead and everyone expected her death scene

but

George Lucas didn’t invent the concept of Hyperspace. It was well-known in sci-fi and its very name implies extra-dimensional travel. Not even the convention of hyperdrives being inoperable near planets and other deep gravity wells is original to him. To anyone familiar with sci-fi up to the release of Star Wars, there was never any confusion.

Have to also remember that the ship was called the Supremacy because Rian doesn't understand subtlety.

The Last Jedi feels so uniquely outdated. Not even just as a product of its time — at the height of Hollywood franchise regurgitation, internal institutional pushback against growing conservatism, pretentious Gen X “deconstruction” of their favorite childhood media, etc. It also feels obsolete even compared to the other 2 movies in the trilogy. It failed to follow up on the hype generated by The Force Awakens and everything it did was contradicted afterwards by Rise of Skywalker anyways. Consequently The Last Jedi, like the Star Wars sequel trilogy in general, feels like it exists in its own strange void. A bizarre moment in Hollywood where the classic heroes got lectured by women with colorful hair or were reduced to being impotent hermits in favor of ugly Asian women kissing black men.

JJ wasn’t in on it because he was a supreme hack, and Rian/KK took advantage of it.

Part of why TLJ dated so poorly is due to how much of its writing is obviously influenced by the state of internet discourse immediately post-TFA. Just off the top of my head, the scene where Kylo Ren tells Rey "Your parents were nobodies" and it instantly shuts down any and all of Rey's curiosity about who they were makes no sense because Rey never thought they were fucking celebrities, but it isn't really about her, it was about all the theorizing about her heritage. Similarly, Snoke being nobody in part might feel like a clever twist... until you remember that the entire reason people were even making theories about who he was was because TFA didn't explain who he was or where he came from in the first place. People were actually giving Disney the benefit of the doubt in assuming there was a plan there and TLJ gave them the finger.
The point is a lot of these movies choices aren't just bad, they're incomprehensible if you weren't online in fandom spaces 2015-2017.

Poe not only didn't cause the Supremacy chase, he was the entire reason the Resistance fleet was (kinda) able to survive it by taking out the warship that we're explicitly told has a one-of-a-kind weapon able to obliterate the Resistance fleet all in one go (the Mandator dreadnought at the start of the film). Like, fuck, the idea that Poe is responsible for the Supremacy pinning down Leia's fleet isn't even in the actual movie either.

>>
>>218198387
Even more than that it means that someone just dumping some garbage anywhere in a common hyperspace lane has now destroyed all travel through it for years. You can blockade any planet you want just by surrounding it with junk because any ship going faster than fucking light running into a few hundred pounds of metal scrap now disintegrates. The entire setting is now completely nonsensical within its own rules.
>>218198551
>too close to a star
Its the gravity of the star that fucks it up which is why especially big ships with tractor beams and shit could interrupt hyperspace travel. Even if not that then you could just guess that even in hyperspace going straight through an extremely large source of energy/mass is fucky in a way that a small asteroid isn't.

>>
>>218201496
The dreadnought being a "fleet killer" is actually supported by the film's visuals too, when it knocks out the planet-side Resistance base there's a fuckoff huge explosion drastically more powerful than most non-superweapon Star Wars stuff, way bigger than what a standard ISD or the Supremacy's cannons from later in the movie are putting out.
Which only serves to make both Leia and Holdo look even more fucking retarded for punishing Poe for destroying it.

Why do you even need a droid or a person to pilot a ship? Why does it even have to be a ship? Why cant it just be a normal missile with a hyperdrive that just uses its normal guidance system? Is there some magical omnipotent entity that approves wether the object being hyperspeed rammed is a missile or a spaceship and if its bein piloted by something sentient or not?

>>
>>218200970

>>
>>218202910
I don't think so. It's clearly got "leanings" but it's not like they directly namedrop BLM or Orange Man Bad. Most of its shittiness comes from Rian Johnson's assumption that subversion (in the narrative, not political, sense) = good.
>>
>>218202644
No reason whatsoever. Just hook a hyperdrive to an asteroid and launch it by remote control.

Don't know about movies, but the most woke shit I've ever seen is American B-tier tv shows for housewives. I can't even grasp what they are about exactly, but every second scene is like this:
>non-white character walks into a bar
>it is filled with middle aged white men and bikers(?)
>they immediately say "we don't like your kind here"
>non-white character ignores them, then every white guy in the bar, unprompted, escalates the conflict for no reason
>next scene is a power fantasy where non-white character brutally beats 20 people and says something like "heh, shouldn't have been racist, kid"
It's either this or literal Dhar Mann youtube videos but with bigger budget and focus on non-whites being victims. I remember one show where a black kid in school's cafeteria was trying to take some food and the white lunch lady was like "you want food???!! you probably stole it!!!" or some shit like that. Absolutely insane. If this is the average content that an average American consumes on the daily basis no wonder there's so much shit around.
>>
>>218203054
Why an asteroid? A tiny pebble at lightspeed would already be catastrophic, so just the mass of the hyperdrive engine itself would be fine.
>>
>>218203692
My mother in law watches daytime network slop like this and it drives me insane.
>>
>>218195018
So why am I supposed to hate her anyway?
>>
>>218199341
I'm not even mad that she didn't tell him the plan at first, it's every time after that is absolutely insane and makes no sense whatsover.

The thing is you could easily fix all of this by setting up their scenes together from holdo's point of view where she explains her plan to leia first, we see the drama around that, find out why it needs to be secret and we see her human side and that's interrupted with Poe being a nuisance or getting in the way as she's preparing to die, but because we're seeing it from Poe's perspective naturally we take Poe's side and we feel stonewalled and gaslit with him because we have no idea what's happening.

>oh but that ruins the big reveal that she's the savior

If you had to gaslight the audience to make a reveal happen it's a bad reveal.

No, they agreed to his one-man assault run to clear a path for the bombers. They changed their minds once the attack was underway and called for a retreat, but both he *and* the bombers were already committed and aware that whether they pushed on ahead to their objective or began their retreat, the bombers were gonna get sniped by the scrambled fighters. Poe, the squadron commander, opted to push ahead and complete the bombing run on the Dreadnought. It was successful, but at the cost of their remaining bombers.

Once he’s back aboard the Raddus, Holdo pulls a reverse-Patton and slaps him for bravery instead of cowardice, then lectures him on the “cost.” Now this next part is crucial - when she slapped him, she *thought* she was in the right (although right or wrong, the slap is even less excusable than Patton’s), because at that point, they thought that by jumping away to Hyperspace would have saved them all. But once they realized that the First Order were in possession of unprecedented beaconless tracking technology, they *should* have acknowledged that had Poe and the bombers not been successful, that fleet-killing Dreadnought would have been part of the pursuit, rendering Holdo’s “plan” of slow-boating to the nearest planet even more futile and suicidal, because from what we’d already seen if it, its firepower was capable of obliterating the Resi-Rebel fleet in swathes instead of picking them off slowly piecemeal like we saw.

And here’s the thing - I don’t blame Holdo for her stupidity and arrogance in never acknowledging these facts, because her arrogance and stupidity aren’t so much hers as they are the moron’s who wrote this shit. It’s a jumbled, clusterfuck of a script riddled with logical inconsistencies. Holdo only thinks she’s right because the dumbass who wrote it is too stupid to realize that she’s ultimately wrong.
